Depending on how many unmarried dependents under 18 you two have plus the $600 wild card, as long as you don't have to use the exemptions for anything else, you may be able to protect about $2,100-2,800 of your tax refund outright using these two exemptions. However, that still could leave a large portion of your $13K tax refund unprotected

Then again...I have very little cash to protect...and I could file as a Texan at end March. (Which seemed further away in November when I started consulting with attys.) TX provides $30K exemptions shelter for car, household, etc., but not cash...but if I don't have a lot of cash to protect, maybe that will be the better way if I can wait.
