Storage Unit - An Allowable Expense?

Hi All -- I have had goods in storage for a long time, and have always viewed that as part of my monthly 'rent' (the apartment + storage). I'm stuck paying for it for now (holds household furnishings) as I do not have funds to move to a larger space to take them. Question: I know this has to be listed on a Schedule G and on Schedule J, but I just wondered if a Trustee would not 'allow' that expense? I did the workup on form 22 and there is no presumption of abuse, but when I look at the income/expenses on Schedules I and J, I realize that if I am not allowed to list storage as an expense, then I could be cutting it close on disposable income. Does anyone know whether this expense would be questioned? It's over $200 per month (the rental unit). Tx.

I believe the storage unit would be listed on Schedule J Line 17 for other expenses. Not sure if the trustee would allow the expense. Maybe one of the more experienced posters can answer that question.

It depends on whether your Ch 13 trustee considers that expense "reasonable". That's going to vary from trustee to trustee. You need to ask the bk attorneys you interview this question - they should be able to tell you if the storage fee will fly with your local trustee or not.

One expects that part of the issue will be if without it you practically have enough space to store your exempt assets.

That will be the first question..."what is in there?" I bet if it is household goods it will be OK but you better have a list.

Thank you all. I am planning to file a Chapter 7, btw. No, I do not have the space to take the goods. Moving the things will be an expensive project, for which I need to plan and save. I would ask the attorney, but am investigating whether I can do pro se ($ issues, as you would expect).

Yes, all household goods, and I can come up with a list. I even have photos if they ask.

We rented a storage unit after closing our store to keep all of the extra junk that wouldn't fit in the house. As of today we've gotten rid of enough of it that I was able to sweep it out and close the account - just in time. We have a review meeting with our attorney next Tuesday and hope to have the filing complete by the end of the year.

I rented a storage unit after I closed my business to store equipment and paid about $110 a month for it. I had an inventory list of everything in it as well as pictures since there was so much stuff and the monthly expense was never questioned by the TT.

The TT did send someone to the unit to appriase the contents, but the junk wasn't worth anything so I was allowed to dispose/sell the equipment without any raised eyebrows from the TT.
