some of my cc's survived the bk. i use them for buying tickets online and such. i don't want to use a debit for those things, that makes me feel that my bank account is too exposed. i don't carry any balances, much of the time i pay before the statement cycle closes. somehow, my fico is already 690... so by the time i'm ready to buy a home (yes, that dream is still alive...), i will be all set.

i don't use cc's for small purchases and especially not at small businesses - the cc companies take 1-2% from the businesses, and i'd rather all the money i pay go to the business.

[QUOTE=freefall;359001]Credit cards aren't the problem: using the credit card is the problem. Once we're discharged, if I can get another credit card, I probably will. But I will never be in debt again.

You are right. It's not the CC itself its the abuse of it.

      Just like cigars and liquor.

I am sure that my occasional cigar and a drink allows me some reflective down time that far outweighs the effects of a once a month indulgence.

I have had my card for a month now and I even overpaid what I owed to make sure that I don't get hurt.

I think that the real lesson here is to have learned to use credit wisely, not to never have it again.

I intend to get back on my feet again and start using CC that offer points etc so that I can take advantage of all that is out there for people who manage credit wisely.
Very fortunate in the grand scheme of things but have learned my lesson.

I have 4 open accounts. I plan on buying a house through the USDA program and I need 620 scores to do so. I PIF each month and only buy gas/groceries. I have had the temptation for the new TV or new furniture...but I remember how the years of hell were trying to keep everyone paid...Never again will I ever carry a balance for anything.

Whipster1, we used the USDA program to buy our current home almost a year ago. Wonderful program!!!

Will we ever have credit cards again? Well... I am going to say no b/c we can't trust ourselves with them. It's entirely too easy to use them. If we can't use debit cards to pay for something like a hotel room or a rental car, then we'll figure something out - even if it means paying more money to go somewhere else.

            other

Only a secured card, or something along the lines of a gas card in order to build our credit scores but once that's reached I'll burn 'em all. What ever we used would have a minimum credit limit on it by request.

Let's face it. MOST of us are here because we ran up cc debt. Some not, but they had cc debt right along with whatever. Many readers on this thread say they would not take on a cc again. I am agreeing with them. It is way way too early to even think of getting close to a cc for most of us, I do beleive. Who are we going to blame next time we have to file? Once is enough for me. I admit that the cc's are too easy. The credit card companies push them on us, but we sign on the dotted line. This bk case of mine is a good lesson to me to use cash. I don't care about my credit score. I have my home and car(s?) and that is all I am going to pay off and be done with it. A simple life from here on out. I got peace of mind coming in a day or so, maybe, and I do not want to lose that again. To put my head on my pillow at night without tears streaming down my face for letting cc companies take advantage of my weakness to use their money is going to stop dead in it's tracks. After this sprint, I am going to kick back and be thankful for what I can afford without cc's. I won't allow them to own my soul again.

Only for business travel, to reserve personal travel, emergencies and to rebuild credit. But I never intend to keep balances on them and will keep them lock away.

DH and I have vowed to only have secured debt from now on. We have been discharged over a month now and bought a car last week. This car was very much needed and we will use this purchase to rebuild our credit in the hopes of refinancing our home and getting enough to do some substantial remodeling in a year or so. We will never have another credit card. We have saved an emergency reserve of $1000 and we have learned to live off the cash we earn. Our motto is....if you can't pay cash for it...you don't need it!

This is "exactly" my feelings. bm35 has it right. Losing work+having to BK is the worst thing that I've had to experience in life (hopefully nothing worse will come along).

We are in desperate need of another vehicle for work. We will be paying for it cash (cheaper used car) once we have saved up enough to buy it.

The "credit" card will definitely be a "secured" card about $500 where I believe you must put up your own $500 upfront and borrow against that (I haven't read up enough on the cards, but that's what I gather). The main purpose (and only purpose) would be to "re-built" credit. There really should be no need for having a CC for "emergency" use. If you recall from the course we ALL had to take, we should have a savings emergency fund! Then, there's no need for a CC. And I know not all have this luxury, but if "the worst came", our extended family (read: parents) would be able to help if we got into something really messy.

Lastly, in a few years, hopefully we are in good enough shape (funds-wise and credit score) to buy a modest home again.. but maybe that may never come? We could be renters for life.. who knows.

I have my bank card now but I still have not been discharged. I have a dept. store card that I rarely use, they may cancel it. But CC debit is not what got us into this situation, so my OTHER answer is because of that. Medical debt, some CC, hubby being laid off for a year, and a drop in my income all lead up to this mess. WE spent our 401K, we spent savings all we could trying to save our home and credit. So, I don't blame just CC, it is the fact that life is not affordable even if your both working you butttts off.... so maybe I will agree with deadman.. lol do it again and often???? Joking, but tempting

Never again! We will only use debit cards.

Don't you get the same Visa protection with a debit card?

I've made it 2 years now without any credit cards and have no inclination to get another.
