I am divorced, and have 2 children. I am going to be filing ch 7 in the next couple weeks. The kids have health insurance from me through my work. When I take them to the dr., I always pay the copay or any bill that I am sent. However, my ex takes them half the time, and I have good reason to believe never pays any copays and just ignores bills that they send.
The reason I believe that is a few years ago, my ex would take the kids to the dentist using my insurance, but never paid the copays and ended up owing like $500. It got sent to collections, and I found out about it when the collection company called me. The dentist never called me about it previously since I was not the guarantor on the account. The collection company told me that both parents were responsible for the account. I have verified this is true in Washington state for medical accounts. So, I ended up paying it off because I was buying a house.
So, the point of all of this drawn out post. Should I list the doctor's office that the kids go to? I am not the guarantor on the account, my ex is, so I don't know if I have access to the billing records. But, if it goes to collections, I could be responsible for paying it to the collection company. I have absolutely no objection to paying for the kids medical costs, but I just don't think it's fair that my ex never does and lets it build up and now I'm afraid there's thousands that are owed. I'm also thinking there's money owed because last time I took my daughter for a sports physical, my ex wanted to change to a different doctors office because supposedly they messed up their billing, etc.
