We are filing chapter 7 in November will discharge A LOT with Chase -- will I ever be

able to get a checking accout with Chase in the future? We have set up checking accounts at two banks knowing that Chase will close our checking accounts once we file. But, I really prefer Chase - they have so many more ATMs and their online bill pay is superior to the other banks.

Does anyone know -- after discharge -- at what point (if ever) can I try to open a basic checking account again with a company that just lost thousands of dollars to me.

They won't close your accounts automatically. But I would not have money in them at the time of filing. You can still keep your checking.

Well, I discharged my first with them $589k plus a cc (only about $17k) and I have a personal checking and savings I opened up after discharge with them. No problems.

cool! I have one very basic checking account open with $3 in it -- hopefully that can make it through the process (not worried about the pennies..just the account!) and after the dust settles I can start using it again.

        THANKS!

Make sure the $3k is allowed in your BK as of the filing date. Check your exemptions. I was only allowed $100 (total cash!) because we are in Fl and the exemptions are tiny. The filing date amount is critical.

My attorney said once my case is discharged (providing no cc objections during the 60 days club ) I can bank anywhere I want to even the same bank I used to have before switching banks prior to filing. I am now getting used to the new bank and like their services so I don't think I will go back to my old bank again. Anyway, I am sure it would be fine if you go back to your preferred bank once your case is closed.

Have you tried BOA or PNC? They online banking is quite good. In my opinion much better than Chase. They also read your checks and take your cash automatically at an ATM. No envelopes needed.

No this is perfect....I did the same thing. I think i left about $5 in. My account is still open, no problems.

When I filed I had a $275k mortgage and three different CC's with Chase. Overnight they all disappeared from my online banking page and showed up on my credit report as included in BK.

I would leave the $3 there, do your thing, and then once you're discharged go back to using the account.
