    Life After Discharge - Employment

I am starting to get really concerned about employment prospects post BK.

I am a full time student at a state university and I recently switched my major to accounting. However, with the BK on my credit report, will I even be able to get a job in the accounting field? Aside from the BK, my report is pretty clean...with a post-discharge score of 620.

I still have about 2 years to go until I graduate. I am really worried that I have shot myself in the foot, so to speak because everywhere I look online there are posts about employers doing credit checks and denying a candidate the position based on their credit report.

What do you all think? Will a BK really destroy my job prospects?

    Time heals all wounds.

Since you won't be on the market for another coupe of years, I wouldn't fret it. There are many people going through a really rough financial time and many restrictions have been relaxed in various professions.

So long as your credit report stays clean, you will be an excellent candidate.

Hey, you might even become one of the Bankruptcy Accountants... since you have experience and all.

everywhere does credit checks- simply no way around it.

In this tough economy (CA is at 11.9 unemployment) it means that much more qualified applicants are applying for more entry level type jobs. That is definitely something to worry about. Since you have two more years of school- i wouldn't fret yet. Maybe start looking around for a part time unpaid internship at an accounting firm or a private office. That may help your chances after you graduate.

you'd be surpised to know who files BK though. I don't think it will "blacklist" you from the accounting field.

It is usually more of a concern when you deal directly with cash.

You shouldn't have a issue. Things happen. Just because you had a bankruptcy doesn't mean you aren't honest. I am in the middle of a bankruptcy at the moment and I am the controller for the company I work for.

As soon as I closed my failed business I let my boss know that I was filing for bankruptcy. I figured it would be better if he heard it from me than found out about it someplace else.

Just make sure you keep your credit good in the meantime. I think you will be fine especially with 2 years to go.
