Please tell me nothing will happen with new bank account?

Hi all - at the advice of lawyer we opened a new checking because one of the cards that will be incl in bk7 is with our credit union. I feel bad and sad... but anyway - we opened a new checking today and for some reason I felt like I was hiding some big secret, and of course, while they punched in our info they said OH! you are eligible for a visa with us. When we declined he seemed to think that was odd. I said, "we're not opening new credit, we have enough". Then as we left I wondered, will our new bank have any way of finding out about the bk7?

So my question, can a bank in which you owe nothing to close your account if you file? Can they find this out? (if we're not applying for anything with them?)

    kinda freaking.

Opening a new account at a bank where you don't have credit cards is a normal part of pre bankruptcy planning. Most of us have done it.

Banks run credit checks on customers from time to time to see what new products to offer them, but only very very small local banks and some very small credit unions will deny a checking account based on a credit score, and since you opened the account you are fine as long as you don't have any credit cards with that bank that you are bk'ing on.
You can't take a picture of this. It's already gone. ~~Nate, Six Feet Under

They could potentially find out if they pulled your credit report for some reason.

But yes, a bank can close your account for any reason it sees fit.

Will it? Doubtful. You don't owe them any money. Don't expect them to cover any overdrafts though.

Why are you sweating this? There's a bank on just about every corner. They're as common as mini marts. If this one drops you, when you depart out of that bank shake off the dust of your feet . . . (to quote a little scripture) and go to the one across the street or two blocks over or across town.
Pay no attention to anything I post. I graduated last in my class from a fly-by-night law school that no longer exists; I never studied or went to class; and I only post on internet forums when I'm too drunk to crawl away from the computer.

Yes they can find out but in most cases they don't care. The big exception to this would be Wells Fargo who has a habit of 'freezing' people's bank accounts and requiring a notification from the trustee to release it even if Wells Fargo isn't one of your creditors. It depends of course how much you actually have in the account on the day you file. Just something to be aware of as I didn't know that and when I told my atty I opened a new account with Wells Fargo, he told me I jumped from the frying pan into the fire

Gee, well, it's not something I've done before - walk away from commitments I made. I am having a hard time dealing with the fact I spent my entire adult life trying to build up trust and now am walking away. I felt like I had some dark monster I was hiding while we set up the acct. We also have cred cards with most of the major banks (whether small or large lines)... Just something I'm not really comfortable with and it is causing my grief.

Wells Fargo will close a checking account associated with WF even if it has let's say 50 dollars in it if a customer files BK? Gosh, Wells Fargo is something else, then

No, no. By "sweating this", I meant sweating the bank shutting you out.
