    Pet and rent question

So, once we have this over with our home will be gone and we will need to rent. How do you cope? I have seen rentals are cheaper, but will they be when I ask about 2 dogs and 2 cats???? My dogs are 12 and 6 so I doubt I can give either to a good home and simply would hate to do that they are from a shelter. And the cats are shelter cats too. I have noticed in MO where I live a lot of people do not rent to you if you have pets.. has anyone else had this problem?

You will find a rental that will allow you to keep your pets. It will take MUCH longer than finding a regular rental. You may not be able to get all the amenities you want. You will have to pay extra deposits and possibly extra rent. But you will find one.

Call your local humane society, sometimes they have listings of complexes that take pets.

It will be much easier to rent a house than an apartment if you have pets. They will usually require extra deposit for the pets.

I think with all of the houses being rented by owners or by companies that are buying them up in foreclosure sales, you could find one that will rent to you with 4 pets.
You can't take a picture of this. It's already gone. ~~Nate, Six Feet Under

Where are you at in MO? I am in St. Louis. We abandoned our house and moved into a townhome. We are saving about 425 a month off of our mortgage by doing so and I know that our complex allows pets. They are also leasing right now.

it will be a lot of looking on your part; and it's tough. But do you want to give up your pets?

Personally i have 2 dogs and i wouldn't even consider for a second not taking them with me. My in-laws mentioned it (a few times) when it was taking awhile to find a new place because of our dogs (small dogs mind you) but it just wasn't an option for us.

Just be ready to show your dogs; that they are friendly, house-trained, not barkers etc. Our landlords didn't care after that.

I even contacted a few that said "no pets" but they would have allowed our dogs- we just ended up going with a different place.

It's more work for you- but you'll find something- good luck!

It depends on the area and the size of the dogs. When I lived in NY no one allowed pets. When I moved to FL everyone allowed cats and small dogs under 25lbs. They usually require a deposit. I think kids make more of a mess than pets. ;)

My sister and her husband were recently discharged from bk. They found a beautiful rental home on craigslist (the listing didn't include "pets welcome" as many do). The landlord was initially hesitant about accepting pets (two dogs, two cats). My sister confidently explained their good behaviors/habits and offered an additional security deposit. The landlord accepted the pets and declined the additional security deposit.

There are plenty of people with rental properties who are willing to bend with a little convincing. They may want an extra security deposit or they may wish to meet your pets. They tend to be more accepting when you confidently present your pets. Trust that you'll find a place that welcomes your furry family!

Thanks for all the advice, and I live in Springfield, MO. I can not give them up really at all. The old one is 12 years old maybe 13 and a 50 lbs dog, the little one is about 15 lbs and the two cats are declawed came that way from the rescue. We saved their lives several years back and to kick them out now would kill us inside. You have all given me hope.. maybe I should post on craigslist what I am looking for when it is time .... I am still doing all the paperwork right now, but my house will be two months behind at the end of this month. Thanks again, pet lovers!!

Personally, for apartments I always say I have 1 cat... I have 2 but they actually want to charge you more just because you have more than 1 cat! Crazy... in your situation can't really fib on the number cause you have 4. But I definately agree with everyone else.... you will find a place!

Rentals are being much more lienient than they used to be. They need good paying people in their places or they are going to have to file for bk too. I considered going into a home rental from a landlord but I was too afraid, in this market, that they might do a bankruptcy after I signed the lease. My renters moved into my house back in Dec 08 and here I am filing now... so, I prefered an apartment complex.

                  Good luck!

Be careful about posting on craigslist about looking for a rental. There are a TON of scam artists on there and especially in the for rent section. When looking at ads, only respond to ones that have a local phone number posted and call rather than email. I went through this last February when I had to transfer for my job. I had also just moved June of last year so I've had to find rentals in two cities in one year that would accept pets.

As others have said, you will have to give up amenities and will probably find an older home to rent. My current landlord only asked about dogs when I signed the lease here. I told him I have one, an Australian Shepherd and yes, he is smaller than an elephant. He charged a $500 deposit and that was that. Never asked me about cats... I have two.

Unless your current home is a disaster (), how about taking pictures of your current home to show potential landlords? This will show them that your pet friends don't destroy everything AND how well you kept your current home Just a thought...
I have 2 dogs and 4 cats, so this was a concern for me, but I decided to keep my home.

                      Good Luck!
