Help, car died, no money for repairs

$269.99 for a new alternator to get me back-n-forth to work. I'm reluctant to use my CC since I'm I'm about a month away from filing in fears that the creditor would object to my charge (even though the statement will say from AlternatorPros).

What would you do in this situation?

Do what ya gotta do. If there is no there is no other way, charge it. Nobody will worry about $269.00

i agree with keepmine. it's only 269. a presumption of abuse arises only at much higher amounts, and not for necessities.

just keep in mind as you prepare for bk that if this happens after bk, you are unlikely to have any cc to use. you will need emergency cash one way or another.

        repair yourself

Go buy a repair manual for $10-$15. The steps are probably pretty basic to replace the alternator on your own. You might be surprised how easy it is.

You can purchase a new or remanufactured alternator from many outlets, like autozone.

I am planning on repairing this myself. $269.99 is just for the part itself

Wow, thats pretty pricey for an alternator. Can I ask the year/make/model?

I bought a tank of gasoline the DAY OF FILING because I was Out O' Money... I figured if they want to dispute that , I will pay the 40 bucks.

An alternator is as far away from a luxury item as I can imagine.

For those of you contemplating using or using credit cards prior to filing and you know you are going to file, that is considered fraud and that is the stuff that the Trustee looks for. You may think it is a small amount and may not be a big deal but it is a big deal to the trustee who knows all the tricks and ins and outs that debtors try to get away with prior to filing. Protect yourself - put those cards away. Or, if you've already retained an attorney, call him/her and ask if it's OK. The last thing your attorney needs after advising you to stop using cards is to be hit with a surprise when least expected.

It is an abuse if you have no intention to repay it.

However, in the grand scheme of things, the creditor is very unlikely to pursue this via a complaint (Adversary Proceeding/AP) over just a couple of hundred dollars.

I will second this. The day I filed (or the day after, can't remember) my car battery died...completely dead so I had to go buy a new one. Thank god I had a little money saved because there are no CC's to fall back on anymore.

Thank you for the sound advice! I have not yet purchased any part and I appreciate all of the information I've learned on here. The last thing I'd want to do is faudulant activities.

Why is it a money pit? Can't you just drive it and do oil changes every 10,000 to 20,000 miles?

The last time I ever changed an alternator was when I used to own a brand new Hyundai Excel. It cost me about $114 from Discount Auto. I burned it out because I had a big stereo. I bought the alternator and installed it myself.

This is why I don't want to buy a used BMW, even though I have one now and they are so fun to drive. I'd rather buy a brand new cheap car... a simple 4-cylinder jobbie that I can service myself.
