Discharged is the Order granted by the court, discharging all unsecured debt (and any deficiencies caused by surrendered secured debt). This comes before your case is officially closed. For a Chapter 7, this is the point where you are debt free.
Closed is where the Trustee has completed the administration of your case. In most instances, and no-asset cases, the case is almost immediately closed after the discharge. It serves no purpose to keep the case open. However, in an asset case, the Trustee must leave the case open to administer the assets of the estate. This can take anywhere from a few weeks... to a couple of years. The reason closure takes so long in an asset case, is that the Trustee may be required to sell property, undue any "transfers" (avoidance), or wait for you to receive an (already known) inheritance, proceeds from insurance, or even your tax refund!
The discharge is the important milestone.
Chapter 7 (No Asset/Non-Consumer) Filed (Pro Se) 7/08 (converted from Chapter 13 - 2/10) Status: (Auto) Discharged and Closed! 5/10
