Financing a Vehicle Prior to Discharge?

We are trying to be proactive and get a vehicle before ours is repo'd.

Today we looked at a 1999 Mercury Villager. Being sold for under kbb @ $3999.

We have a $2k cash down payment. We would finance the remainder for a term of 1 or 2 years. We are military and would have no problem setting up an allotment.

My DH was upfront about our situation and everything seemed to be going well until he started the paperwork.

They don't want to do financing until we get our discharge papers. Is this typical? Should we expect to not be able to arrange to purchase a vehicle until our discharge (hopefully a month or so from now)?

I just don't want to end up with no vehicle.

I notice no one answered, so this is my 2 cents worth. I had 2000 to spend and got a 2000 vehical cash -- the vehical was worth more than the 2000 but since I had money in my pocket, the dealer gave it to me then and there. I am now selling that 2000 vehical and buying 500 dollar vehical that is much better (an engine with 30K miles and a great car frame) from a private owner (also no financing).

I tried to do the financing route. What I got was grief and a lot of evasiveness. I found that I had to go to private owners (with cash) and offer cash at dealerships. When you peel open a money roll a lot of rules get broken.

Financing is going to be very hard for people like us.

    Otherwise I can't help you.

      Hmmm.

I would rather buy something outright with cash. I am not looking to get something super fancy or anything. We are looking for a minivan because we have 4 children, 2 in car seats.

I don't want anything we can't pay off in 2 years, and 1 year would be preferable. I guess I should be looking at CraigsList.

Is this Villager from a private party or a dealership? If it's a dealership have you offered them the $2K? They may take it you never know.

Dealership and they didn't take the $2k although the salesman was surprised they wouldn't, LOL.

I am looking at a 1999 Plymouth Villager for $2200 on CL.

Seriously I'm surprised to. My grandparents pay cash for their cars and they always get huge discounts. Around here cash talks.

That 99 model looks good though!
