Got a "Notice of appearance and request for notices" from a lawyer for GMAC today. What exactly is that?

It means that GMAC, well it's representative, wants to be kept up to date on the case electronically. Especially in a Chapter 7 case, secured creditors like your car lender or home lender, want to be updated when things happen with your case. By itself, it means nothing.
