Good Luck to you guys .. Met with my lawyer today and his advice was to NOT use the cards.. Got home and took all the cards out of my wallet.. I am now officially part of the plastic-less society ) Willl be filing this month if I can get everything accomplished that needs to be done.. Told to stop payments as of now..

Thanks very much. It's been 7 months on the balance transfer and I've made 6 payments so we should be fine.

I'll post as we go along through our process. It has actually been great to no live on the cards for the past few months.

Today in the mail I received a letter from Citibank who we owe $41000 to offering to allow us to settle our account of $15,000.00 less at this time which is just now 45 days late. Unbelievable that they wouldn't talk to us about lowering interest while we were trying to pay our account and now are already willing to settle the account.
        Filed Chapter 7: 7/3/09

Funny, before I even thought about BK, I was still trying to dig my way out of debt and I called my biggest creditor, Chase...they wouldn't help me either...they gave me a credit counseling #, who in turn advised me to file for BK. Not wanting to file from BK, I called Chase back and BEGGED them to at least lower the min. monthly payments...nothing...

Same here Liz... Chase was absolutely evil. I was current up till Feb with them and then I got laid off. I called them to see if they could help me, lower the payment, put me on a program or something... they said no... and just because I called to tell them I was having difficulties they raised my interest rate from 8.99 to 29.99 ... hmm...that made the situation better how? Was one of the reasons that I was forced to do chapter 7 because the payments got so astronomical just because they felt like it.

              Your Welcome.

I cannot believe these guys.. They cannot help you out but now are willing to settle.. Not right we are basically at their mercy as to what they can charge us what is a big part of the problem.. Any how as I left the lawyer's office there was a big store front with glass windows.. It had a huge Chase sign so i looked over stuck my arm out the window and said, Up Yours LoL felt pretty good.

Yes, I know the feeling...Amex lowered my credit limit each time I made a payment, to exactly $200 over my balance...causing me to "max out" my credit card (mind you I had NEVER been late or missed a payment with ANY of my creditors in 25+ years!!!). That in turn caused a "domino effect" on my other cards, which ALL raised the interest rates from 3.99-9.99% to over 29%...that did it for me....

Funny I was mad a first when the credit card companies wouldn't work with me... They actually did me a favor. If they had lowered my interest rate or payments when hubby lost his job, I would have kept paying and paying and paying. Thank you chase, boa and all the others who pushed me over the edge.

it's funny how these huge cc companies and other creditors are getting such bad advice that leads them to refuse to work with us. they should hire one of us as consultants. they would end up making a lot more money.

I agree. It's almost like they push you to file, it doesn't make any sense to me. But all the weird fees that they start tacking on after you miss your first payment is amazing. Citi alone has added almost $5000 in fees in 2 months. My attorney says that's what they want to do to have a larger balance to write off and somehow they turn that into to money too! Once I saw those fees, I wasn't guilty for not paying anymore.

At first it felt so strange to take all of my cards out of my wallet, but my purse is so much lighter now

We've moved all of our money out of BofA and are part of my MIL's credit union now. I have to go use the last $50 at the market today from Wells because I hear that bank is the worst with freezing accounts once you file. Problem is my equity line payment is there and is auto deduct.

The way my lawyer explained it to me was that of the payment that you send in only a small amount goes to citibank or chase for example and maybe a little extra for some small fees... The main money goes to someone else..some big louies that sell parts of the package to trust funds type of things.. Kind of confusing but he was explaining to me like Late payments are one part, interest another part, etc etc. Very Complicated and I think they like it that way ..anyhow that is prolly why to us regular people it doesn't seem to add up..

Re. your purse being lighter )) Nice ..my wallet is so thin now lol ... not making those monthly payment takes a big load off our shoulders though .. That is such a relief..

You got to do what you got to do to protect yourself from them freezing your accounts ..

These guys are so big they have lost common sense.. Like when sears raised my account from like 7.99 to 25% and when I asked they said," well we need to charge that to stay in business." I told them fine I will never use the card again and never shop at sears ever again.. How does that help your business ..Goofballs
