    LOL @ Discover

Discover is fast!!! I filed like 2 days ago and Discover has already shut me down. They took away my online access, they sent me emails cancelling my online correspondence program and they sent me a letter in the mail lowering my credit limit... lol.

Now lets just hope they don't fight my balances... balance transfers on 3/6/09 ...

Did they lower your credit limit or close the account?

Hehe... I think maybe the letter that came in the mail about lowering my limit was before they decided to close the accounts... It said they checked my credit and based on that they lowered the limit... lol. I just thought it was amusing that within less than 2 days of filing they revoked everything. My other credit cards I can still get into online etc...

I have heard that Discover is very aggresive in general ... so, I hope they go easy on my BT's.

Discover didn't waste any time getting to us, either. Both dh and I have accts with them. When our bill was only a couple of days late...and before we filed.....they were calling. I had already talked to their hardship people a couple weeks prior and they couldn't help me, so I told the gal that and that we were now planning a BK since credit cards don't seem to care to do much to help us in the short term. The gal tried arguing with me until I shut her up. They gave up for a week. In that time, we had filed. I gave them the case number and atty info and all contact stopped after that, thankfully.

interesting! i have two discover cards with zero balance. unlike other cards, discover did not shut down my cards at all. i even called once just to verify, and the rep said she hoped i would start using the cards. they have no clue about the bk.

in my experience, the way to find out if they closed the account or not is to call the number on the card. if the automated system tells you what the credit line available is, then the card is open. if it just says what the balance is and if a payment is due, without anything about the amount of credit available, then the card is closed.

That is interesting. But I bet they will figure it out eventually. Just like the letter I got in the mail...they checked my credit randomly to see if I could get a credit increase, then instead, saw that I was heavily in debt and inqueries and lowered my limit... I bet once they check your credit again... they will close them. The rep really has no control over that its more of the auditing department and the computer systems.

As soon as you file, they will shut down your cards. Whether you file on them or not. That stinks, I know!

True, they will eventually close them. There was a poster on this forum that had a credit card make it through her BK (if memory serves me correctly, I think it was Flamingo and it was some kind of store card), anyway, the card remained open even AFTER her ch 13 discharge and I believe she had even used it a couple of times. It wasn't until later (a year or two) that she went to use it and it was declined...they closed it after all that time! There are some cards that "make it through" but most likely it will be closed.

So, I go pull my credit report this morning from equifax... for some reason I get unlimited credit reports with them for free...

And it had a credit alert saying "Discover has changed the balance on your card from 5,133 to 0 and listed as "included in bankruptcy" ...

I know people have said what's on the credit report really doesn't matter...but if they have zero'd out the balance does that mean that they aren't going to dispute my balance transfers or can that still come down the pike?

It probably just means that they've charged off the balance. I don't think it guarantees that there will be no objections. When were your BTs; how much were they and when did you file?

i think with BTs, since they are not new charges but just transfering the balance from creditor A to creditor B, even if creditor B were to challenge it, the worst that would happen is that creditor A might have to give some of it back to creditor B. a BT isn't a fraudulent charge if the original charge wasn't fraudulent.

i don't know this for sure, and i have no experience with it, but that's how i would think the law should work. after all, had you not done the BT, you would have owed that money to creditor A and would have included creditor A in the bk instead of creditor B, which would really make no difference in your filing.

it would be good, though, if you made a few payments on the discover cards since you did the BT. that would demonstrate that you didn't have an intention of not paying. i don't see how they could challenge that if you did make payments.

Yes, I paid the discover cards in April and May.... so I had 2 payments under the belt before it went in.
