contract work and proof of income

Hi, we are getting ready to file chapter 7 july 1st and I work sporatically for a marketing company developing marketing material..they have full time staff, I work every so often doing overflow work. Anway, I've made about 6500 from this company during the last 6 months, but have no paystubs, since the owner writes me a handwritten check. Two of the checks I walked into his bank and cashed and did not deposit. How do I provide proof of this income for the BK without having to tell the owner of this company what is going on? I do have a 1099 from him for last year showing 17,250 worth of income. My atty told me a while back that they would use bank statements....is this right...what about the ones I cashed at his bank????? I had also asked a question before about raise in income after filing and I imagine it is a common question and that is why it has not been answered, but i looked back through threads and cannot find an answer! thanks

oh! Also, we are very close to the median...like around 1,000 under....will they look at us extra harder because of this?

I assume you pay your on self employment taxes?

If so go to the owner and request a copy of wages stating that you need it so that you can make an estimated tax payment.

I did answer your other question, it is not advisable to increase income by more than 10% prior to the 341, after the 341 an increase is more likely to be under the radar.

You need to go to the HR Department and request copies of your invoices and pay advices.

My husband worked as an Independent Contractor, and kept all of the invoices he provided to the employer, but also the employer provided actual payout responses to his invoices. (I am not sure I am using the correct terminology.)

However, it boiled down to the HR Department--or actually the Accounts Payable Department providing a copy of his invoice and a voucher showing that the matching invoice had been paid.

      Good luck to you.

Thank you, I did see your response after I wrote that..and i appreciate it...that is a good idea...I do file my taxes with the 1099s and they take what used to be a nice return for the sake of the taxes!

This company is small and I basically send an email to the owner once a month or when I've done a substantial amount of work, and the next time I see him he writes me a check...there is no HR department...no invoices, except the emails...I know if it comes down to it, he will provide some documentation for me....I just don't want it to look sketchy because it is such an informal process...

That basically is how my husband used to bill for his services. He worked as an Independent for years for a small town government. Some months-no calls, some months-50 or more depending on the nature of the work.

The owner can get copies of the canceled checks for you from his bank. Don't try to file empty handed as far as proof of income is concerned.

If nothing else start printing out those emails if they contain the pertinent information.
