If you end up having to take it to a Camera shop, I would be specific and either come right out and say it's for a bankruptcy appraisal or make sure it's what they would pay you for it, not what they "think it's worth".
Basically let them know you are ok with a lower value, and don't mind them finding all of the problems (oh, no original lens cap, some scuffing near the flash mount, etc.). Otherwise they may try and "do you a favor" and give a higher appraisal thinking it's for insurance purposes or something like that.
