Should I get married?

I may or may not have to file BK within the next 6 months. It's a long story that I will spare you all. My concern is that my fiance and I really want to get married this summer. I'm worried that if I file BK after we get married it will be bad for him? Does it even matter?

Unless you two have joint debt prior to filing... then I don't see any issue. When you're doing your consultations with attorneys... bring this up.

Nothing happens when a married person files alone, unless that person has joint debts (co-debtor, co-signer, guarantor, etc) on those debts. I don't know any particular impacts in a community-property State, but if you don't have shared debts...

I'm getting married on June 6th and it actually helps my bankruptcy. Because now its 2 people living on 1 salary. Your bankruptcy will not affect your husband unless as the previous poster said you have joint debt...but that would be an issue if you were married or not.

I'm engaged to a man who has custody of his daughter, and my attorney advised me not to get married until my BK was filed. The reason for this was because his income + my income = over the Chapter 7 means test for a family of 3. So, you would need to make sure that income-wise, ya'll are below that threshhold. They will count his income regardless of if you file jointly or alone.
