OMG!! I got a tax refund and have an offset!

Oh my god! I cannot believe it! I went to get my mail today and I had a check from the Fed for my tax return. I still owe them, 1500 ish for 2005 taxes, which I assumed were not going to be discharged, and just get eaten up by my return leaving me with a little balance as they had garnished my wages until BK.

Does this mean that my back taxes were discharged?

I was not expecting this at all.

Damn, it pays to open doors for the elderly and disabled, that karma stuff is just workin' out for me great lately!

I unfortunately wouldn't count on the back taxes being discharged.

The reason you most likely received the refund was because you are still
in the bankruptcy filing with the IRS so most likely the offset was suspended.

If you case had closed before you filed than the refund would have been offset.

Wow! that is cool! Is this a refund or the rebate that some people are getting?

I owe this years so no refund for me but I am supposed to get a 300 something dollar rebate.

No, It was my regular refund. It included a bit of the stimulus money that I didn't get last year (which they swiped by the way) Even on the IRS Wheres My Refund page it says my return was delayed still), so I was pretty certain I wasn't getting a penny, plus I thought I still owed them. I am discharged and done with my BK, almost a month ago. I had not counted on this at all. I filed after my discharge date. So I am hoping the tax debt was discharged. Even if it isn't, I am thankful for the little boost in income I just received. Couldn't have come at a better time.

I was seriously about to take all my diet coke cans to the recycler for gas money to get to work.
