Repo Advice: Don't be dumb like me!

Our SUV got repossessed in January and auctioned off in February.
It got picked up on a Saturday. I called the Sheriff's office on the following Monday asking about the license plates and was told that they were routinely
turned in, not to worry about it, they were already removed.

Well, dumb me believed that and didn't think about it anymore.

Then I got a notice from the DMV stating there was a block on my husband's license because we dropped insurance and didn't turn in the plates.

I had to get a copy of the sheriff's deed, send that and all of the repo legal papers to the DMV. At this point the car has belonged to someone else for over a month. They reviewed it and said that it was still my fault and
I had to pay the fine to clear his license. The woman at the DMV said that
I should know better, and the law states I have ten days to access my vehicle even though it was locked up at a salvage yard.

So, ignorance of the law did not help me!

Don't forget to take the plates off of your car before the repo man leaves!!
Or exercise your rights to go and get them wherever your car is taken, or
pay the fine. Don't take someone else's word for it like dumb me did.

So find out what company repossessed your SUV and tell them you want the costs of the fine.
If they were supposed to turn them in and didn't and they caused you a loss you can recover that in small claims court very easy.
I don't know about your states rights, but in many states cars are taken without the owner present or having knowledge of it.
And in many states you are now allowed access to that vehicle after it's taken for security reasons.
