Just as an additional input to what everyone has stated, they can put it on your credit report with as little as your date of birth or street address! Credit reports aren't "really" by SSN, but SSNs are good to link people to their credit. The CRA's (credit report agencies') systems are so good, they can untangle a web by related addresses and map you down to the first place you ever lived and obtained credit! They can do this with just your name and street address.
So, it's not necessary to have an SSN to have an account listed on your credit report. This is done often, and American Express does this often (when additional cardholders are added). I've added many family members without SSNs, yet the cards show up on their credit report.
