Am I able to rent an apartment while in bk.My 341 is on April 29.I was just wondering how filing would affect me getting an apartment.I currently live at home with my parents.
    Filed Ch 7 Petition: 03/24/09

    Discharge Due: 06/29/09

Well if the apartment runs a credit check and you don't tell them you just filed they would probably deny you. If you do tell them you will look at higher deposits probably or still outright denial.

As far as the court goes if you were in a 13 it might matter as far as expenses go, but since your doing a 7 not so much. I always like to think waiting till hearing from the trustee at the 341 is a good thing. You will know then if anything funny could crop up. Other then that looking for a place to live is not going to be a real issue I would think.
    3/2/09- Filed: chapter 7 / No asset
4/1/09- 341 Hearing: 1 creditor showed up Got to love family feuds
4/2/09- Trustee Report of No Distribution Filed
    6/24/09- Discharged and case closed

It may effect you negatively, and it may not. It's very hard to tell in advance. Your best bet is to save up all you can for the deposits, and look for something that's affordable to you. Be upfront with the manager about your bkr. Ask before you fill out the paperwork if your bkr automatically disqualifies you in their eyes. That way, you don't waste your time and energy.

It also may help if you have a roommate. That lessens the directly responsibility on you. Also, do you have to move out of your parents' right away? It is to your advantage to stay there as long as possible. Perhaps you can reach some arrangement that is mutually beneficial where you chip in monthly for mortage/rent, utilities, food and labor around the house and still set some cash aside.
I think of my bankruptcy less as "walking away" and more as "gnawing my leg off to get out of a trap".

Living with your parents as an adult is difficult, but do remember that when your parents are your landlords they love you and want you to be happy and successful. Factor their love and support in whenever you are considering moving out, and you might just find your parents are the best thing going.

Yes, some people find it difficult to rent after a BK, but with so many people filing now, and so many other people with terrible credit otherwise, eventually landlords will have to rent to us - there won't be anyone else out there. It will have to get better, and I have a bet some new laws will be enacted. Many landlords, especially smaller independent ones, really only care about two things: can you afford the rent, and have you ever been evicted before?
Scared to file. Scared not to file.
