    How do they find out?

I just received a letter in the mail from a bank saying that they are closing my credit account because i filed for bankruptcy.
Now this account showed as open on my credit report, but was never listed in my BK because i do not owe them any money. How do they know i filed, and why are they telling my my account is closed if i haven't owed them money in over a year... i didn't even know i still had an account with them until i pulled my report to file.

Most financial institutions have risk management depts. that look for info on account holders.
    Filed C7: 12/16/08; 341 Meeting: 1/22/09
Last Day for Objections: 3/23/09 (No Objections)
    Discharged: 4/3/09
    Closed: 3/23/10

I believe it is some sort of bankruptcy filing notice service that the large lenders subscribe to, here is one sample of a notification service for BK's:

Remember, we are in the information age!
        Filed CH 7 9/30/2008
        Discharged Jan 5, 2009! Closed Jan 18, 2009

A creditor can close your account at any time for any reason (look at the clauses in the brochure/paperwork you obtained when you signed the agreement for the credit). They got wind you filed BK either by you BKing an account associated with that bank in some way or via your credit report if they checked on that. Most zero balance cards do not survive a bankruptcy filing even though they are not included in the filing. They eventually get cancelled out; if not right away then several weeks or months, even years (in our situation) down the road.

Thank You for the quick responses....
I am just a little concerned because if they found out this easy, and i do not owe them money at all. How does my place of employment not find out..when they are invested in me?

Your BK is a public record. Anyone who knows your name can conduct a search on pacer and view your entire case.

Every single creditor on my credit report were listed on some part of my schedules, I think they got a letter or something saying that I filed bk, including the ones that had 0 balances. At one point in time I think I had around 30 different open credit accounts--most I never used, some I even forgot I had...I don't even care or want to know if I have any accounts still open.
