My name on mothers checking account

I know I will have to tell that I am on my mothers checking account as a signer, and as such I own it as much as she does, but I have never written a check, deposited money or done anything except sign the signature card. She did this because she is elderly and wanted me to be able to pay her bills for her if she becomes ill. Every penny in her account can be traced back to her social security direct deposits and annuity income. I don't even know how much is in there...but it can't be more than a couple of thousand. What can I do? I can't take my name off, it will look like I am trying to hide assets...but they aren't even my assets. I can't use my exemptions for it because I am in Fl and only get $1000 exemption for bank accounts, furniture, etc.

Get document proof that all money in the account can be traced to your mother's social security and annuity. You most likely need to tell her of your position right now, make sure to get a good lawyer and mention this up front. They should be able to help you.

no I don't believe you would be under suspicion of hiding assets. the 1st thing i did when contemplating BK was have my mother-in-law remove my wife from her checking account mainly to keep the bank from seizing MIL's cash when we default on the CC which is my wifes only.same deal here, she was on the account for emergency use only in case my MIL becomes incompasitated. have your mother go into the bank, cancel that account, and re-open a new one. then go to SS and report the new account for the direct deposit
      Stopped Paying CC's 2/2009. Retained Attorney 1/10/2010 Filed 1/23/2010. Discharged 5/19/10 $187K CC, $240K 2nd,$417K 1st, No asset Ch-7
