The fact that the BK will be on the record for 10 years is what will hurt you.
That's true in some ways, however, the current rules to obtain an FHA loan are 2 years after discharge and sometimes a minimum score of 580 or 620 is required to do so. So for me, I need to work on getting my scores up so I can obtain a mortgage in the future. I don't care so much about getting credit cards, but do need to establish some new credit in order to get my scores high enough to get the FHA.

What ansky0007 said really caught my eye. I filed April 22, 2009 and the creditors are still reporting late payments. I didn't realize this could be contested. Do I contest with the credit bureau or the creditor?????? Thanks for any info.

They don't have mortgages? I have some Danish relatives coming this weekend for an All American BBQ at my parents house, I will have to discuss this with them.
No, you do have mortgages ...but you are negotiating it with YOUR BANK. If it fits into your budget...they give you the loan. There may be some other factors that I'm missing but all in all its pretty simple. Same with a car loan... you first go to your bank and ask them how much you can afford. Then, you pick out the car and then get the bank to issue a draft. Its also wierd because everything is so expensive in Denmark so like their car loans can go up to 30 years.

My fiancee is Danish... but he loves the US way more than Denmark now... lol.

I got a 5k cc pretty quickly out of bk. No fee from NFCU. BUT - I only use it for rebuilding purposes and nothing else. I haven't gotten a grip on the new cc legistature but my understanding of it is that we will be charged interest as soon as we use the cards. Whereas before, if it was paid off in a certain amount of time the interest would be waived. So for this - I haven't been using mine. Insofar as my credit scores, they aren't bad. I think they are including my car debt which was discharged and I need to get the bureaus to correct this.

That's interesting. So there is no crazy "FICO" scoring system? LOL. I hope to visit one day. My parents went when I was a kid and my grandparents went every other year or so. I remember my Farmor's sisters and some of their kids visiting when I was a teenager too. They all love it here!
