    Help! USAA Question?

I filed Chapter 7 in Oct and was discharged earlier this month. I have USAA for Checking and also had a $10,000 mastercard that was included in BK. So far I still have all of my online access, but everytime I speak to a customer service rep over the phone they tell me that I will lose it very soon.

I wasn't paying attention when I filed my tax return and forgot to change my checking acct and routing number to my new bank acct and now my $2500 tax return is scheduled to go into my USAA checking account.

My QUESTION: Do you think they would/could take that money away from me, even after my debt has been discharged? My plan is to take the money out ASAP, but since there isn't a local branch, I am limited to $600 per day ATM limit. That could take 5 days to get all of the money out. I'm just afraid they will see it sitting in the account and take it. In the past (prior BK) I have been able to call customer service and ask for a one day/24hr ATM withdrawal limit increase. I just dont' want to call and draw any extra attention to that money sitting in there.

Anyone have any experience with actively using their USAA account after BK?

    Thanks.

They can't take your money but your online access will be cut off. They also canceled my auto insurance. The funny thing is I have a Roth IRA worth about $200 and they print out the statements and mail them to me every quarter. I guess they'll be do this for the next 25 years when I finally cash it in.

I can't believe you have online access. They probably cut mine off within minutes of getting notified.

We also cancelled our USAA insurance before we filed. We had a hefty insurance rebate (over $3k) and they deposited it into our checking account. USAA did not touch the money and we were able to withdraw it all. We were scared so we got it out of the account asap.

You may not lose online access. I had lost my online access when I overdrew my checking account. Shortly after filing, which included the overdrafted checking and a $2000 credit card, my online access was actually restored. As of now I still have insurance but my policy is supposed to renew in May, so we shall see.

So USAA always cancels auto insurance when their CC account gets BK?

How much notice did you get for the auto cancellation?

If I recall, it's difficult to get insurance when one is currently uninsured -- or, maybe that's health insurance.

Rats! If there was any company that I wish I could keep a relationship with it's USAA.

My online access and auto insurance were canceled about 8 months after discharge.

Thanks for the heads up on USAA Insurance

I am about to file this month. Just trying to get a loan remod prior to. Nonetheless, I have changed my insurance over to Geico for home and auto and changed my direct deposit. As mentioned, it can be difficult getting a decent rate if you have been canceled. Note: my overall Geico rate is cheaper. My home insurance was reduced by over $100, same coverage, but my auto increased. My net however is about $90 cheaper.

              Thank you BK Forum

It is my understanding that IRS won't start processing returns until 1/15 so you may have time to call and make changes.

I claimed my USAA credit card and a car insurance balance. They took away my online access before I filed.
I do have a savings account with very little money with them. They did not close the account or touch the money.

I called them after discharge about online access. They said I could only do the mobile site which can also be accessed on a regular computer. You can't really do much on there. They said I could do bill pay if I already used it but couldn't add any payments. It was pretty much "this is what you get for the next 7 years", "call the bankruptcy department in 7 years".

On another note. I got my dividend letter recently and it said it was going to be applied towards my car insurance policy. Well I don't have car insurance anymore but again I claimed in the bk about $300 in unpaid premiums.. Isn't that kind of like collecting on the bk'd debt?

Quick note: USAA has now passed a new policy internally that allows restoring limited online access (to their mobile site, essentially, but it gives you all accounts) to people who were involved in a BK.

You need to call them and ask for it.

Is the blocked online access only if you had a financial account with them? I've had auto insurance with them since 2002, payable monthly by auto-debit, and still have online access, even though I filed on 10/28. They aren't included in anything. They also renewed my policy on 11/25 with only a $10 annual increase.
