I will be filing for Chapter 7 on Friday.I would like to open up a new bank account with the local credit union before I file.Am I able to this?Will I have to notify my lawyer.

You can open a new checking account with a small amount.
when the trustee asks at your 341 if anything has changed just tell him/her you opened a new checking account. and hand him any statements for that account.
If you do it before you file yes let your lawyer know he can list it and then you don't need to say anything to the trustee.Chapter 7 07/30/2008
