Repossession-Need better car

I just wanted to add that I've been searching for old used cars on autotrader and on craigslist and I have found plenty of acceptable ones for about 2500-3K. If you can do a minivan (maybe like a 1997), you can get one that is running and in good condition with about 80K on it. Even if you spend 5K on a car, there is no promise that one will last too. My honda's transmission went at 78K miles. I don't race the car or do anything except drive and take care of it. This is a horrible time but I just bought AAA in case I break down for piece of mind.
** minivans aren't the only options- I've seen Dodge Intrepids (like 2003) for that range because they don't hold their value. Today, I'm possibly going to by my "new" car for $2300 and it is a 99 full size sedan. Along that will be many prayers that it lasts but at least I won't have a car payment and can use that $$ for repairs if needed. Just a thought.

I am just curious to know why people opt for older, less reliable vehicles when they know better stuff is out there. I had a friend go do this after I told them not to. The engine in a car they bought started knocking really loud and now it will cost $4,000 to have the engine replaced. Then people have thousands in repairs not too far down the road, then I have to sit there and say, "I told you so."

It's like people are being masochists. I just wanna know why people like to self-inflict pain on themselves. It makes no logical sense.

Why would you want something older, have more miles, more problems and more headaches when you don't have the money to begin with? That's just opening a can of worms. All I want to know is WHY?!?!?!

AutoTrader.com makes it so easy to find newer cars with low miles from a dealer or private person. It took me only a few minutes to locate those low mile, late model, low-priced cars. I am not understanding why other people are not doing the same thing. Why is this so difficult? PLEASE EXPLAIN!!

Not everyone sees the same car the way you see it. I can use your last sales pitch as an example.

You bragged of the miracle of Amsoil. So I assume if I buy a 1998 car with 140,000 miles on it for $2,000 that used Amsoil exclusively and it was changed every 6,000 miles I would be better off than if I bought a 2004 car with 70,000 on it for $2,000 which had been run on Wal-Mart oil and the oil changes were completed every 16,000 miles faithfully.

If you know all about Amsoil, why are you not using it? You've already read my posts before. If the oil you're using now has to be changed more often and protects less, there's no logical reason to use it. Not trying to put you on the spot, but you're being another example of a person who likes to self-inflict pain on one's self by causing slow damage to yourself. It's like a person who smokes cigarettes and doesn't care about cancer. I think logical. Even if I enjoyed smoking, knowing that this kills people every day is enough to make me stop.

I am trying to find the logic of why people like to make themselves suffer. So far I cannot see the logic in it. It's like people want to cause grief on themselves just to get attention or something.

Remember, there's no right or wrong answer. This is not a debate. I am just wanting to know why people would rather spend more money on an older car prone to more problems than buy a cheaper, newer car. Very simple question.

Good answers would be:

- I have a ton of money to burn and I've always wanted to get a transmission replaced.
- A good friend of mine is a mechanic and is broke. I wanted to buy an older car that way I could spend the money with him getting him to fix the A/C for me.
-I've always wanted to buy an old car to experience what it was like to have to go out and buy motor mounts, shocks and get a new timing belt installed.
-A newer car would be too boring. I was interested in buying an older car so that in a short time I could go out and have the transmission removed in order to replace the leaky rear main seal on the engine that keeps dripping oil in my driveway.
-I always was always curious about buying an older car so I could spend an extra $1,000 to have a mechanic sit all day to remove the entire dash to replace the A/C evaporator that had a leak.
-I always wanted the challenge of buying an older, high mileage car so I could hear wheel bearing noise. A new car wouldn't give me the enjoyment of getting that repaired for a while.

Those would all be good, honest answers. It could have simply ended at that.

I guess you're like me and you're sitting home, unemployed, too. It's fun, isn't it? I don't miss my day job. At least I can sit here and read the BK forum today while "some" of my friends are at work, while the rest of us get to stay home like a bunch of old, retirees.

Off topic: If you're working from home, why sit and suffer in those brutal winters in Ohio? Why not do the same work from Texas, Florida or Georgia and not have to deal with salty roads in the winter or state income taxes?

Hey, enough about Ohio (and more specifically, Northern Ohio) weather. We moved here from Washington, DC, four years ago and I would take a Cleveland winter over a DC summer any day! And while DC in the spring is gorgeous, I think we appreciate it more here because of the wait.
