    Can I buy a laptop?

Our home computer is super old and barely works. I want to get an inexpensive laptop (less than $500). Can I get away with that using my tax return? I consider a computer a necessity not a luxury, and I won't be buying a $2000 Mac.

have you filed yet? are you discharged? does your trustee want your tax refund?

Can you exempt it. Could you exempt the cash? Could you exempt the laptop? If they would both be exempt then it shouldn't be a problem. If you are taking cash which you are unable to exempt and purchasing property that you can exempt, you may have a problem.

Have not filed yet and I don't even have a lawyer on retainer yet. We probably won't file until April or May. I figure a $400 laptop depreciates greatly the second you buy it (as all electronics do), so it wouldn't be worth much at garage sale value.

We got a huge tax return and right now I"m spending it on household goods as in food supply, toilet paper, etc. Nothing of value. But a computer is something we really need.

Go ahead and buy it. Looks like you'll be spent down in the 3 or 4 months before you file.
