They won't come take my car, so I'm taking it to them!

My credit union hasn't bothered to file a Motion for Relief from Stay yet. I guess they aren't in any hurry to come take their SUV. Problem is, when I got my other car, the insurance on the SUV was only good for 30 days after the adddition of the replacement car. Insurance on the SUV is gone as of Monday. I just talked to them to see if they'd come get it, or if there's a place I can take it to over the weekend. They said I have 2 options: Wait for them to get it after I'm discharged, or bring it to a branch office during business hours.

I live in an apartment, no garages. I really don't think it's a great idea to leave an uninsured car sitting around in my possession for 2 more months. So, I'm driving it to a branch first thing Monday morning. The branch is about 3 miles away, but it won't be insured during that 3-mile drive. I'm nervous about it, but I figure it's a small risk to just be done with this whole thing. I can always claim ignorance -- say that I thought the insurance was good thru that 30th day, not ended on the 30th day.

Anyway, wish me luck. I also hope that once I get there, I don't face a huge attitude from the branch manager.

Ugh. I had to do the same thing. It was a relief, once it was off of my shoulders. GOOD LUCK!

"Attidude" him/her right back. Make sure that the gas tank is completely empty.

We had to do the same thing with two of our cars, to two different dealerships. One was a breeze, very courteous, the other--a huge pain in the behind. We actually had to go back a 2nd time because the department they had to call to handle it was closed....Since yours is a CU I'm sure you'll be fine, but it would probably be a good idea to call the morning you are bringing it in, and get a name of someone to meet with, just to make sure the person who can handle it for you will be there. Might eliminate a teensy bit of the hassle And I TOTALLY agree about the gas tank!!! Good luck on Monday

You're being paranoid. I drove a car for FOUR YEARS with no car insurance at all. I was had no job and could barely afford gas, let alone insurance.

It doesn't matter what happens to the car. You're going bankrupt and won't be responsible for it anyway. I would keep it and use it as much as possible. That's what we are doing with our $40,000 SUV. I'm dropping the insurance on it and will keep it for 6+ months if I have to without paying a dime.

we dropped the insurance on a 2007 mustang we're letting go off in our BK in May about 2 months ago. Haven't paid the payments to ford, and haven't heard a peep about no insurance.. i think all these companies are having a hard enough time as it is. I still have insurance on one car we're driving. But that's mostly just incase we're in an accident and need medical or something.

DogBone, that's my point. That's why I'm nervous to drive it for just those 3 miles Monday morning to drop it at the bank. My only other option tho is to leave it sitting in the middle of an apartment complex completely uninsured for 2 months or however long it takes the CU to come fetch it. Also not very safe, and could cause a liability to me.

Debtmonster, it is a big deal to me... I don't tend to break the law, and having insurance is the law in Florida.

And to add, I am an insured "person." I have my own policy, it's been in effect for over a decade. It just applies to the car I'm driving now, and no longer applies to the car I'm surrendering on Monday.

Just curious if the laws are different state to state. or perhaps you no longer have plates on the car? In NY if you have plates on the car (or don't physically surrender them to the Dept of Motor Vehicles), then you fined daily because liability insurance is mandated here. Are the plates on another car or does your state just not have a law like that?

If you have no coverage for 1-30 days it is $8 a day fine, 30-60 days $10/day fine and 61-90 days $12/day fine. Drivers license get suspended after 90 days in addition to the fines.

My answer to that is... DON'T HAVE AN ACCIDENT!

Pay attention to the road. I've managed to drive well over 500,000 miles of driving since I got my license and never got into any accidents. If I can do it, you can do it. Be positive and not negative. Chances of crashing are very low. If you're accident-prone, you shouldn't own a car to begin with.

Don't talk on cell phones, do text messages or eat while driving. Always keep your eyes on the road 100% of the time. Drive the speed limit. Never break the law under any circumstances.

                        It worked for me.

I know a few people who've been in accident with uninsured drivers. NOTHING ever happened to those uninsured drivers. Just look in Miami with all of the Cubans driving down there without insurance. They all seem to get along JUST PERFECTLY FINE without it. If you don't have any money, they can't do anything to you. You're totall immune. You simply have to STOP with the paranoia. Just remember, they can't get blood from a turnip. It's only when you have a house in your name PAID FOR and tons of assets that you have to worry about getting into an accident without insurance. As long as you don't have anything they can put liens on, you're safe.

I no longer worry about anything anymore. Stress takes years away from your life. It's simply not worth it.

Years from now (hopefully after 2015) all of this financially crisis will start to correct.

The cost of the ticket (if you get caught) is cheaper than the insurance. You're being paranoid all for nothing. BELIEVE ME. If you drive like a maniac, then that is your own doing. Cops NEVER look at me when I drive. I always do the speed limit and come to complete stops at every stop sign and red light. Don't give them any excuses to pull you over and you will have no problems.

You guys need to be MORE POSITIVE and stop being SO NEGATIVE.

You gotta do what you gotta do. This is survival mode now. Driving for a short time without insurance isn't going to kill you. Like I said, I did it for 4 years in a row. I'd still be driving without it now if I had a used car paid off with no payments. I don't believe in insurance. Your premiums over a lifetime always exceed the cost of any accidents you had within that lifetime.

Well, my 3 mile drive this morning with no insurance went just fine. Nothing happened. Doesn't mean I'm going to drive like that all the time, tho, which is why the car I'm keeping is insured.

I don't mean to be rude, Debtmonster, but what you're doing is advocating breaking the law. Yes, I broke the law this morning, and I was worried about it. I may not own a home, but I'm not judgment proof, either. I make a decent living and I would prefer not to have my wages attached over a lawsuit. I also would like to buy a house in 2-3 years, so a judgment is not something I want to happen. It's worth the $90 a month piece of mind to me to just pay the insurance company.

I saw your other thread regarding not wanting to get yourself a used car.... yet in this thread you talk about "survival mode" and advocate driving illegally without insurance for 4 years. It's contradictory. REAL survival mode does not include a new $25K SUV like the one you want to buy.

Oh, and to add... "don't get into an accident" is all fine and dandy to say, but you can't control the people around you. (Even the "Cubans" you speak of.) In 2008 I was T-boned by a 15 yr old driver with a learner's permit. I was also rear-ended trying to leave a parking lot by some old man, another thing we have tons of in Florida. I was not at fault nor was I cited in either instance, and believe me, NEITHER ONE was avoidable on my end.
