I don't mean to be rude, Debtmonster, but what you're doing is advocating breaking the law. Yes, I broke the law this morning, and I was worried about it. I may not own a home, but I'm not judgment proof, either. I make a decent living and I would prefer not to have my wages attached over a lawsuit. I also would like to buy a house in 2-3 years, so a judgment is not something I want to happen. It's worth the $90 a month piece of mind to me to just pay the insurance company.

I saw your other thread regarding not wanting to get yourself a used car.... yet in this thread you talk about "survival mode" and advocate driving illegally without insurance for 4 years. It's contradictory. REAL survival mode does not include a new $25K SUV like the one you want to buy.
Glad it went well, and that the ride was uneventful.

And I agree, I cannot believe that someone is advocating breaking the law. BTW-there are many people driving around all over the country with no insurance and they are not just from Cuba.

I too am waiting for Citi Bank to come get their car....I called them in early January and they said they would call me when they are ready?? I do keep insurance on it because I'm still driving it, otherwise I would drop it.

Yeah, I dropped mine because I haven't been driving it, but they gave me a 30-day overlap where both cars were insured. That 30 day overlap expired on the surrendered car today. I know several people who have driven without insurance at one point or another, and you gotta do what you gotta do, but it's def. not something to pimp to other people as a good idea. I don't think DebtMonster made that Cuban comment in a racist way, he/she probably lives in Florida and is well familiar with our illegal alien problem. We also have an old person problem, lol... people that should've surrendered their licenses when Bush Sr was in office. Not saying all old people drive badly... just saying, a lot of them tend to. Same goes for teenage drivers.

Just not worth the risk, IMO. It's not paranoia and it's not that I need to relax... it's a reality. I didn't file bankruptcy only to emerge from it with a pending lawsuit, or a suspended driver's license, or a mountain of fines and tickets.

Unfortunatly Citi Bank is out of state so I have no where to drop it off. I guess I'll continue to wait and see if they ever call for their car.

I've heard that sometimes you can drop off at a dealer.

In 2008 I was T-boned by a 15 yr old driver with a learner's permit. I was also rear-ended trying to leave a parking lot by some old man, another thing we have tons of in Florida. I was not at fault nor was I cited in either instance, and believe me, NEITHER ONE was avoidable on my end.
You let yourself get into the position to be crashed. You should have avoided those. About the only thing you can't control is when you're sitting at a red light and some idiot rear-ends you at 40 MPH.

Why is your insurance so high? I have a $43,000 BMW and my full coverage insurance on it is only $60/mo.

Are you driving a $100,000 dollar Mercedes or something?

Funny how people don't seem to T-bone me... and over those 500,000 miles of driving, many of those miles included doing 80-100+ MPH.

Ever since gas went over $1.50/gallon, my days of high speed driving were completely curbed.

You need to be paying attention at all times to not allow those accidents to happen.

Needless to say, I wasn't looking for the SUV to be $25,000. That's what she told me the price was. I was hoping to get it for well under that. I have no plans whatsoever in paying anything over $15,000 on my next car.

If all goes as planned and if I can stay in my house for at least 12-18 months, I will try to save $10,000 to $12,000 cash for a used vehicle.

DebtMonster, I'm so glad to know you've been following me when I'm driving and have come to the well-researched conclusion that I somehow played a part in the 2 crashes I mentioned. Are you seriously trying to claim that sans a rear-ender at a red light, ALL accidents are avoidable? Seriously?

Consider yourself lucky that you haven't been t-boned by a teenager or rear ended while waiting to pull out of a parking lot. Ever heard the phrase sh*t happens? Because it does; it truly does. Maybe not to you; perhaps you live in a protective bubble. It must be lonely in there. You're going to piss a lot of people off on here with absurd arrogance like that.

My insurance of $90 a month includes my renter's insurance, if you must know. I was insuring an 04 Nissan Xterra, and now I'm insuring a 2000 Infiniti sedan. Insurance price turned out to be the same for both cars. Many factors play into your insurance price -- like where you live, for example. I live very close to USF, where the highest car break-in/car theft rate in the city of Tampa happens to be. When I lived in Lakeland, it was cheaper. Moving back to Tampa did raise it a bit. But the price I pay certainly has nothing to do with my age (over 30), my claim history (nothing in over a decade), or tickets/accidents (see the "safe driver" tagline on my license). I find it to be a perfectly reasonable price, honestly, and with a reputable company.

So.. you have an expensive BMW, and an expensive SUV... or would that be a BMW SUV? 2 vehicles? 1 vehicle? Doesn't really matter; you can't afford them, but you sure like to brag about them. Most people on here are sheepish about admitting they spent that much $ on a car and then found themselves on this forum. It's called humilty and realizing your mistakes. Most of us (yes, including myself) are embarassed about what's happened to our finances. We're not here to insult people's driving abilities, advocate something that's against the law like driving without insurance, or brag about how much "stuff" we have in our quest to keep up with the Jones's, so to speak.

I hope you manage to tame down your taste for fancy things as you go through your bankruptcy. And for god's sake, stay in "Central FL" and out of Tampa. I don't think we can handle your special breed of driving prowess here.

Well, he certainly gave this thread a bad name. I've seen him around and he's not usually so... icky. But I digress as this is, I assume, a G-Rated forum.

Back on the original post: If anyone is going to turn their car in voluntarily, I just wanted to mention how that part went. The lady at the CU was very polite; pleasant, even. She didn't make me feel like I was screwing over her employer, even though essentially that's what I'm doing. I'm sure some people don't have a pleasant experience with this, but mine was cool, so yours might be.

My daughter was driving the speed limit in the right lane. A utility truck had just passed her in the left passing lane. He must have forgotten she was there, cuz when he saw the address he was going to, he right-turned directly in front of her. She had nowhere to go except into his side.

Of course they both had insurance, but for my daughter, it was an unavoidable accident. We just thank GOD that no one was seriously injured.

Oh....and my neighbor was sitting at a stop sign and the truck that was turning the corner had their load shift and a pile of construction material flew into her car, pushing her off the road. No injuries, but another unavoidable accident for her.

And had either of the at-fault drivers been uninsured, the other drivers uninsured coverage would have kicked in and paid.

Debt monster....your all wet. Please quit giving bad advice and stay in Florida.

That's RIGHT, Daisysmom! We all pay uninsured motorist coverage on our policies. I had forgotten about that. So essentially, how does that work? I'm assuming that if a non-insured driver hits an insured driver, and it's the non-insured's fault, that the insured driver has to make a claim on her own insurance, thus raising her own premiums? If so, that's just delightful. It's fun to have to pay the price for other people's willful negligence.

My BMW is an SUV. We were making $100k/yr. when we bought the cars. We had 3 incomes back then. Now we're down to 1. You need to drive a car the same way you would a motorcycle. You always have to assume that people will do dumb things... which by your posts, you have proved that they do. I always assume the worst will happen and that's how I avoid accidents.

I don't give bankruptcy a bad name. I am just being positive and not trying to be so depressed about it the way you guys are. You guys get all upset over nothing. That won't solve your problems by getting mad at a post. Those are my thoughts and opinions and I am entitled to think that way. This is a free country, last time I checked.

I wish I could video tape my bankruptcy and post some funny Youtube videos about it. They don't let you bring camera's or anything of the sort in those places for your 341 meetings or anything do they?

No one's upset. On the contrary. I'm amused.

I wouldn't drive a motorcycle, but that's just me. And honestly, people who are overly cautious and tentative and hesitant and trying to view all angles all the time can cause just as many accidents as those who aren't paying attention at all.

I drove a motorcycle all over Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. In one year I put almost 19,000 miles on it. Before that I had a scooter and put almost 50,000 miles on that. Every where I went was WIDE OPEN THROTTLE. And I drove both without having a motorcycle license. Never got pulled over on either in all that time. You need to use common sense when you drive and drive SUPER DEFENSIVE, which I always do. I always anticipate something bad happening around the corner, so I am always careful.

Here's a BK question... what happens if you file BK in one state and then move to another? Do you get in trouble for that? Do they make you come back to the state you filed in?
