Doesn't hurt to still get the NOLO book and read through it.
My lawyer told me I was the most prepared client he ever had, I knew how things went as well as many of the lawyers.
See 3-4 lawyers before deciding on one, many do offer payment plans, but do have to be paid in full before filing the bankruptcy petition. During the payment plan many are willing to field calls from your creditors and take some of that burden from you.May 31st, 2007: Petition Filed by my lawyer

You would be very wise to get an attorney for your filing. I am not an attorney and I don't particularly care for them, but they do serve a purpose. Most districts have a very low tolerance for mistakes that are made by pro se filers......the bankruptcy code was written by lawyers and should be navigated by them as well. It's wise to educate yourself about the process, but I would not advise representing yourself. You would not perform open heart surgery on yourself so why would you attempt to get your financial life back on track without the assistance of a professional that is there to guide you?Filed: 10/25/08 (No Assets, CH 7)

If this is going to be an asset case, you need to seriously consider what impact your not understanding certain aspects of the BK Code will have on your assets.
Basically, my recommendation is that one should not file pro se unless they are a no asset case (Chapter 13 or Chapter 7).
If you have a no asset case, that doesn't mean you won't mess up on exemptions (by not exempting certain property, or doing it wrong and being challenged by the Trustee).
Now that I said that... I didn't follow my own advice, but my case is a Chapter 13.
Filing pro se takes diligence, great organization, great understanding and ability to comprehend the laws of not only the BK Code (Title 11 U.S. Code), but also underlying state Bankruptcy and non-Bankruptcy laws, and being able to research cases.
Then again... I did it. The forum owner created a special section of this site for Pro Se filers and you're welcome to continue to ask questions. Just don't be shocked by how many guide your towards a lawyer.Chapter 7 (No Asset/Non-Consumer) Filed (Pro Se) 7/08 (converted from Chapter 13 - 2/10)
