So then he asks to verify the last 4 digits of my SS #...I tell him, I am filing for bankruptcy and he can call my attorney for any information he needs. Then I try to give him my attorney's name and number....

He tells me he CAN'T and WON'T update my account until I verify my SS#. WHAT THE F*&*%!!?? So as long as my account is not updated, he can continue to call.

OK, funny thing.... I am only in collections with this CC for $400!! Yes, I said four hundred dollars....... I owe about $50,000 +++++ on all of my cards and the cards that I owe the most to like 15 GRAND!!! Just thanked me and never called back. One even said she was sorry I Had to go through this and wished me good luck!!!

UGH - I gotta deal with bull crap for $400!!!!!!

I would have said: There is a 0, there is a 1, there is a 2, there is a 3, there is a 4, there is a 5, there is a 6, there is a 7, there is an 8, and finally there is a 9. Take your picks-you might get lucky, go jump into shark infested waters.

They need to verify to whom they are speaking before they continue because they are only allowed to give info to the account holder. I would not want them continuing with their spiel if someone happened to pick up the phone at my house.

Just ask THEM for the last 4 numbers they have and you will verify or ask them to verify with some other info like a home address.

Collectors are people, not companies. They might be educated or not, some are very young due to the nature of the job, some have manners, some not.

Why would you speak to someone like that, telling them to jump into shark infested waters?

The guy had a VERY VERY thick Indian accdent...no doubt a farmed out employee. His is probably not even in this country.

Funny thing is that this debt is the one with the LEAST amount of money owed and they came on the strongest. I could send the money and clear it up if I wanted to, but I would rather pay my attorney and get filed ASAP!!!!

Only two more months until I can do so...can't wait

If you are filing bk they don't need that information. First of all the only thing you need to tell them is that you are filing bk and you were instructed by your lawyer not to speak with them, that they should contact your lawyer, give them the number and hang up, simple as that. If they want to ramble on and not listen to you Hang up! You are just a number to them, they don't care about you. They are paid to do a job, probably the only ones making a decent living these days, but you do not have to take it.

I tell them I was a victim of identity theft, and that I won't give my SS# to anyone. I'll be happy to verify that the information they have in front of them is correct, but the information itself isn't coming from my lips.

And, if you have already retained your lawyer, give her/him that companies contact info and let them deal with it. That is what you paid them for. Believe me, ours has earned every penny of her retainer fee.

Be very careful! This is phone phishing, and the person on the other end of the line was probably not calling from Capital One. If you ever get a phone call like this again, tell them that you don't give out your social security number over the phone but you'll call them back. Most of the time they'll hang up and vaporize.

Now, be nice - they are just people trying to do a job most of us would never want as they have been instructed to do.

We got ourselves into this mess and it is a pain when you have several calling at all times of the day but it is not their fault.

As I had posted on another thread, every single one of the people I have talked with have been very nice - some even wishing me good luck after explaining my situation.

But as posted above, never give out your SS# over the phone unless YOU called them - you have no idea who you are calling. (You know, in thinking about it, their stealing someones ID that is going into BK is almost poetic Justice. - jb

They didn't ask for a ss number. They asked to state the last 4 digits so they can veryify who they are speaking to. They NEED to verify before they proceed so they don't speak to someone else of your personal info.

I just tell them no, but if you give ME the last 4 numbers, I will verify. Or, ask them to state some other info, like address and you will verify. If you don't want to speak to them at all, just hang up.

This really is no big deal.

They are supposed to verify that they are talking to the right person BEFORE they indicate that they are debt collectors.

The other stuff is just file maintenance for them, I guess they feel it improves their chances if they are always verifying something...like anybody really trying to dodge them is going to give them any real corrections right?
filed chapter 13..confirmed...converted to chapter 7...DISCHARGED!
