zonal denial
sorry for the thread drift - dm, i live in zone 5 ! ! ! there's a foot and a half of snow on the ground. but there lies my cold frame - manufactured with salvaged old glass windows - my neighbor helped me construct it - it's filled with winter greens - growing happily aside a snow drift ! i have always grown my own veggies - before there was a "slow food" movement or a "whole food" movement. why ? i love good food - especially produce, and you're right, it's very expensive, but once you grow your own, you won't want to step foot in a commercial produce section. i grow only what i like to eat, and now, i grow what the two restauranteurs are requesting. i grow: figs, espaliered apples and pears, one peach tree, blueberries, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, kale, carrots, beets, radishes, onions, leeks, peas and green beans. i also grow thyme, lots of basil, oregano, cilantro, parsley, rosemary for my herbs. then, i always try something new - this year, i'm into corn - ornamental corn (makes a great privacy screen). i also want to get some chickens and a rooster - araucana chickens so i can have fresh eggs every day. they lay the most beautiful eggs ! free range of course ! what will my neighbors think ? again, sorry for the hijacked thread
