I think talking about religion is very dangerous when you're mixing it with a touchy subject such as money.

I for one, do not like religion and think it is is all a scam to control people. In my opinion, I wish they would outlaw all religions around the world to stop the wars and killing.

This is a problem that many experience. In what leads us up to our bankruptcies we often have scrimped really bad on various things.

It is indeed a good feeling to walk in and pay for what is needed.

Things I've done that had been neglected prior to the bankruptcy

1. Replaced brake lines on my car
2. Replaced fuel lines on my car
3. Replaced part of the floor in my trailer
4. Began landscaping around the trailer
5. Had food to eat.
6. Been able to tithe again and offer fast offerings ( I had stopped doing this trying to make ends meet and really felt bad about it, was really good to get it going again).
7. Had new eye glasses (after about 5 years)

So yep I can understand your joy

Boy, can I relate.... I have one kidney, and I have been needing to get an IVP for a few years now. (I'm supposed to have one every year to check it.) That is on my list....however, now that I've received a "presumption of abuse" letter, I'm wondering if I'll have to put it off even longer. Sigh..

I hear your joy and second it!
My son's new eye rx had been sitting on the fridge for months.
The saturday after christmas we walked into the eye place, picked out his frames, paid cash, and walked out 2 happy campers.
It is so nice to be able to go to the grocery store and be able to get everything on your list, not just the utmost of essentials.
We have 4 kids to clothe, and they all decided to have growth spurts at the same time. Only one we are able to hand down to, so 3 of them need new! I was ever so grateful that people listened to me and got them clothes for christmas, as it is just enough to get them through til tax refund.

Having the little extra each month means I'm not totally screwed when I have to pay our ins deductible in a few weeks.

When that tax refund comes, it will be a flipping mountain off of our shoulders! Lawyer paid, new glasses for me contacts for hub paid, total tune up on dh car paid!

Life is about to get much better. And it feels so very good.

I can't wait until I can let go of this breath I've been holding for so long and pay for basic utilities without having to worry about how we'll eat in the final few days before payday...

For tithing, I think it's a wonderful thing that makes you feel like you're giving back to a service that brings you faith.

I don't attend religious institutions but I have my own way of tithing. There is a homeless woman who sleeps outside of the gas station I go to. She looks about 100 so I'm guessing she's in her 70's or 80's. She's a teeny little thing who never asks anyone for anything. I found out she likes hot chocolate so every time I am at the gas station, I buy her a cup of it. I can't save the world, but for $1 I might be able to restore an old lady's faith in humanity.

Blankslate, That is so kind, and it's too bad more people aren't like that. I live in New York City, I see homeless people everyday, I always give them something too, whatever I have, be it change or if I had an extra bagel that I was going to save and eat for lunch later on, I will give it to them, they need it more than me. That is so true, you can't change change the world but what ever you can do for someone can make brighten their day. Really sweet to read that.

That's EXACTLY what I wish people would do... not give to churches while to allow people speaking the word drive fancy cars and live in expensive homes. That money should all be tithed to homeless people exactly the same way you did.

A church is like a "middleman" for those people. They skim off the top. What you essentially did was skip the middleman and give the money right to the person who needed it without somebody else skimming off the top.

You did the right thing. I wish they would outlaw religion and just let people do the right thing.

Instead of giving 10% to some people who are already well off at a church... give 10% to the poor in the streets.

I understand the feeling about being able to buy things that you need. We have food in the house once again, and one of the most joyous things that I have had happen financially is to be able to pay my mortgage around the 30th of the month... for next month!

I'm not worried about paying my mortgage. I am just wanting to buy food! SCREW THE MORTGAGE! I wanna eat!
