    I'm no longer a reject

A few weeks back I posted that my husband and I tried to open a checking and savings account at Wells Fargo but they rejected us after they ran what they called a "credit risk check". Well today we went to US Bank and they gladly opened up both types of accounts for us.

I took the advice I received on this forum and opened the account with $800 that I have been hoarding. I will receive my debit card within 4-7 days, which will be plenty of time before I leave on my business trip to Austin.

US Bank is the bank that does the financing for 722 redemption so I took a chance that they would be bk friendly and had GREAT results. US Bank is a strong bank and has recently acquired Downey Savings and PFF Bank & Trust.

wells fargo runs customers through both chexsystems and a credit check. They don't decline on bankruptcy alone- but if there are judgements etc it doesn't fare well. They do have an account that is opened for those in that type of situation. It's called the "opportunity checking". It was probably something that showed up on your credit file when you went to open an account.
good news on the new account though!

Thank you - I wanted to share this with you all because today I feel vindicated. I have been in such a good mood today. I feel so "worthy" again. I'm not a criminal, just a lady needing a new checking account to start fresh.

This is a lifechanging experience for us.

Wells Fargo informed us that something was showing on our Equifax which disallowed them from opening an account for us. They sent us away with a paper stating how to contact Equifax. We just assumed it was the BK. We have never written a bad check, we are not in the chexsystems, and we don't have any judgements. Believe me, we were quite perplexed when we left.

have you checked your credit report- or equifax? They shouldn't turn you away just because of that. What state are you in? Sometimes they don't offer certain products... Good for you on the new account- it's nice to have the "starting over" feeling!

It's not uncommon for this to happen. Most banks are using credit reports now. My current credit union is using them too. They are also well within their rights to do so. There is no absolute guarantee of being given the priviledge of getting a bank account simply because one feels it's right or wrong to do so.

As someone pointed out in the other thread, it's a sinking economy out there, and they are protecting their interests.

I'm just a bit leery with US Bank. I've had some issues with them, mostly with their 5 Star Guarantee they offer, as well as conflicting information given between their branches and telephone customer service. Just keep this in mind: If you move, don't lose your ATM card. I had a nightmare of a time trying to get a temporary one.

ETA: Equifax would not show bad checks, so I'm sure it probably was the BK. They don't like people with BKs. I know my dad had a hell of a time keeping his checking account after he filed. I think the fact that he had an account with them since the mid 60s trumped that he was a bad credit risk.
