My husband and I have finally come to an agreement about filing bankruptcy. How much does it cost to file on average? I was on the internet and it stated the processing fee was $299. I thought when I was looking into it a couple of years ago it was $1500 for a couple. If it is $299 I am not complaining lol...I was going to use my tax refund to pay for the filing fees.

You were more correct with about $1500, and also then costs of filing about $250 or so. That may be where you got a misunderstanding. Don't quote me, I don't know where you are so it could vary. 'HubIf I knew it all, would I be here?? Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.

You can do everything by yourself, but it is time consuming and a lot more stressful than just hiring an attorney. Plus, an unexperienced person may make costly mistakes. Many people stop paying their minimum payments on the unsecured debt to save up for the attorney before filing. It is also almost required to not use any of your unsecured debt for "atleast" 3 months. Most will say waiting 6-7 months is preferable

I am currently considering two attorneys:
1.) $2500 fee (plus filing and credit counseling): strictly a BK atty and local.
2.) $3500 fee (plus filing and credit counseling): general attorney and downtown.
Only reason I am considering #2 is he was referred to me personally, but for practical reasons alone I am thinking #1 makes more sense. Thoughts? If I close my eyes and imagine this was all a dream, will I wake up from this nightmare?

I checked with three attorneys in Michigan. It went from 1500-2500. I found one for 750.00 + 299.00 court filing fee. Don't forget the mandatory pre Bk filing class ( $35-$60)
We contacted the trustee's law firm and they recommended our attorney. My wife didn't like our attorney at first because his office made us fill out a ton of paperwork. I said that's good.. he's trying to get the best view of our situation as possible.
