Wells Fargo was MEAN to me

This whole BK process has been quite humbling to say the least. I'm 45 years old and have NEVER been rejected for any type of credit, car loan or home loan. UNTIL YESTERDAY.

A brand new Wells Fargo bank just opened up very close to my home. We thought it would be great to have a bank account closer to home and not have to go across town for our banking needs. So yesterday my husband and I went to the bank to open up a new checking and saving account. I walked in, with cash in hand, and was REJECTED for an account. WOW did I feel pathetic.

I guess I am stuck with my Bank of America account at this time.

Does anyone know of any BK friendly banks?

I am sorry that happened, but on the flip side, Wells Fargo was one of the few banks to weather the financial crisis because they were more risk adverse than their competitors.

I wouldn't call that mean. Mean would be loudly announcing to whomever was in the bank that you were rejected for an account because of bankruptcy and hoping that everyone would stare at you.

You might want to look over at CreditBoards.com and see what BK friendly/banks that don't check credit/chex reports are available for your area. There are bound to be some somewhere.

You also might want to look into your local credit unions and see what they require. Most usually don't check credit/chex reports. They just require a minimum deposit to start a savings or checking account with them.

Wellsfargo...could be pretty mean. When I was going through the bk process, they closed my acct that ive had for 8 years and would NOT re-open it. I deposited a check from my sister for $600 and something went screwy with her acct and it wouldnt clear the first day. I had the funds in my account to cover the check too! But they closed it! That sucked cause they also froze our funds for about 2 weeks prior to sending us a check for the amount that we had in there. Jerks!

It is odd that the poster was rejected opening a simple checking/savings account because of a previous bankruptcy - not even involving Wells Fargo products. Normally it is only people who are on the Chexsystems list who are turned down for a checking/savings account.

The reason we decided to go to Wells Fargo is because we did not have any credit or loans with them included in our BK filing. We are not on the Chexsystem. The banker said "something shows up on Equifax for you and we are unable to open an account for you at this time". She then hands us a piece of paper with the following:

                  Chexsystem - Equifax - TransUnion

and she puts a big circle around Equifax. It then gives us an address where we can write for a free Equifax report since we were REJECTED.

This will take some time to get used to. I guess, always being approved is something I took for granted. It's OK though - being knocked down a few notches has really opened my eyes and I vow to be a better steward of my finances from here on out!

You know maybe its because you have a fresk BK that hasnt even been closed yet. Maybe you should wait until your case is closed before trying somewhere else..Just a thought but its still crappy..Your not asking for their money, you were trying to give them yours.I love my bank..its small and they let me bring my Gabby in and she does tricks for everyone at the bank. The bank manager even gets on the floor with her and plays...I hate the big banks..do you have any smaller banks by you?

I already have an account with Wells Fargo and have withdrawn all but $15 in my Chk/Savings account. Will they automatically close my account once I file BK? I have a credit card and LOC with them that will be included in the BK.

Have you already filed your BK and has it been discharged? I ask because a family friend just filed and she tried to open an account at Wells and they rejected her too because she had an "open" BK (she hasn't even had her 341 yet). She went to CalNational and it was fine (we are in Los Angeles). So, if you haven't yet been discharged and you really want to bank with Wells, maybe you can after this is all done. On the other hand, having been with BofA for 17 years (since I was a teller for Security Pacific while in high school), I moved to a credit union and will never go back to a bank -- in fact B-a-n-k is now officially a four-letter word to me!
If I close my eyes and imagine this was all a dream, will I wake up from this nightmare?

Having a BK on your credit reports is sometimes all it takes for some lenders/banks to deny any kind of credit or accounts with them. All of us who have filed BK have been denied even after having stellar credit prior to filing; however, there are some of us who have been approved for credit but it is usually after your discharge has been in place for several months. Wells Fargo is not being "mean" they just have tighter lending practices in place and reduce risk with those practices. Most creditors/banks are all doing that at this time.

Wells Fargo requires a credit score of 650 and that you not be listed in Chex System to open an account. The person that turned you down for the account had no idea that you had filed a bankruptcy. He/She simply got a Yes/No answer from the computer. A personal banker could get a bit more information or a branch manager but not just anyone working there. This is true to open a savings or checking account.

Wow, I've never heard of a bank doing a credit check for a savings or checking account. I have heard of them not offering overdraft protection or anything for a while after opening, but never of them refusing a checking account as long as you had the minimum required balance. I totally believe you....just haven't heard of it personally. I don't get that one....they aren't extending any credit to you. I guess you could bounce checks, but the check system makes that tougher nowadays. It is a shame that credit is beginning to affect everything from getting a job, to getting insurance, and now opening a blessed checking account!!
