I am not an expert but here in my state i did not use homestead and was allowed XXXXX amount of dollars to exempt anything I want... I still have 11k unused, I thought in Florida you have about 1 mil worth of homestead, if you paid 7500 for him then I am sure you can use an exemption to exempt him, they put my dogs as $1.00. the thing to do is look up exemptions for your state, also look to see if your state allows federal exemptions too, if it does you can choose the one that is best for you... if not then look at the one for your state and it will tell you on there.

The unused homestead exemption is only $4,000 per debtor ($8,000 for debtor and debtor-spouse).

FYI, the Florida Homestead Exemption is unlimited when actually used on a homestead (real property).

Just want to corrrect one thing. Florida's "homestead" is for your home only. It is not a wild card that you can use on just anything. If you do not own a house and are NOT claiming the "unlimited homestead" you now do have an extra $4k which you can claim as a wild card (per filer).
