If you go Chapter 7
it will not be bad at all. My husband had filed Chapter 7 ...12 years ago and I met him just after. within 2 years of his filing he had a mortgage at 5.9 % and loans, car loans and credit cards all with great rates. To be honest it really did not affect his life, i would only want credit for a mortgage or car again anyhow credit cards are just no good.
it will be fineB x

J & J - what you are going thru is the norm. Everyone of us went through what you are. I think its the initial shock of filing. Once you file, you will feel the weight off of your shoulders. Believe me this is the right choice. Just keep going on this forum reading and asking all kinds of questions. No question is ever stupid... EVER. Everyone here is nice and patient. I have learn a wealth of information here. We are all here for the same reasons. Goodluck and welcome to the Forum...

Just breathe
Disconnect your phone-thats what we did makes life so much easier
Meet with a lawyer and see what he tells you about your situation.
If this situation will release you of daily frustration that you can not fix in the next few years-bankruptcy will probably help you in the long run. It just all depends on how much debt you have and how many assets you want to keep (house, cars) etc.Filed-10/2008
341-12/10/2008
Discharged-3/17/2009

BK is nothing now it only takes a year or so before you are back on track.
this is not the 70's or even 80's where Bk would destroy your life.
If you file and get rid of everything, then get a secured card and rebuild your credit.
Did you know Thomas Jefferson filed for BK and he was a founding father of our country.
Really it is not as bad as it seems.
try and have some extra cash on hand and a decent place to live and a car. Then do it and wait.
It will not take 10 years for you to get credit,
Withen 2 years you can get house loan. With todays realestate market and economy waiting 2 years for a house is a bargain.

I just filed 3 weeks ago and have already received pre-approvals from credit card companies. Of course I haven't filled any of them out. I got myself a shoebox and put the offers inside and will sort through them after discharge. Or maybe not - I like the idea of just a house payment and car payment.Chapter 7 filed 10/21/2008
341 - 11/26 went smooth NO ASSET
Took 115 days after 341 - But Finally DISCHARGED 3/25/09

I do understand how you feel tho. Since I'll be 59 in a couple of weeks I feel like 10 years is the rest of my life....

Breathe....
I am a now-single working mom of two small kids. After years of excellent credit, my marriage ended. The downward spiral began. After enduring nearly a year of nonstop collections calls and a ridiculous amount of stress and anxiety, along with a new job at work, the light bulb finally went off...file bankruptcy! I was so tired of struggling from month to month and couldn't see an end in sight. To file bankruptcy would be such an embarrassing failure for me -- it would prove how irresponsible and incompetent I really am. NOT! The fact was that my credit was already ruined with late payments, so how much worse could a bankruptcy be? I contacted my atty with the thought that a Ch. 13 would be my only option because I was well over the median. I just wanted the creditors to stop calling. NOT! Once he completed the means test and was eligible for a Ch. 7, and I could scrape up the $300 to get the paperwork started, my prayers were answered. My 341 no asset meeting was on 10/27 and I expect a discharge the day after Christmas. So far, so good. Honey, don't sweat it. You gotta do what you gotta do to keep the family afloat. As many have said here before, "bad things happen to good people." Cheer up..it's not the end of the world, for sure. Just remove the emotions from the equation and handle your business. I wish you the best of luck.

Breathe...
I understand the stress you feel. I spent a year trying to convince my hubby that BK was our best option (we have a voluntary surrender aka repo). The last few months were the worst - the constant phone calls from 8 am to 9 pm. I hated the sound of the phone ringing - and I never, ever answered it. AFTER signing the petition, however, I answered each call and gave the creditor my bk info and they never called again (most of them - there were a few I had to threaten). RELIEF! So, hang in there - it won't ruin your life and you'll be able to relax, breathe, and start over. In the meantime, if it's possible to leave your computer on and hook the phone line into I would recommend looking up www.phonetray.com. There is a free program you can use to "zap" the calls so your phone only rings once. You program the numbers (you can do it after they call once) and you have a choice of what happens (hang up, different messages, etc). It was such a relief for me - the phone still rang once, but that was it. One particularly harassing creditor I actually routed their call back to themselves (so they called me and got their own company). Hey, it made me feel better! Good luck - you will make it through and things will be better!
PS: I started receiving offers for cars and credit cards 2 days after filing! (I have tossed them all)
