Companies have rights too
first let me say I hope it gets better for you! I really do. I have worked in Retail a very long time and I completely understand why we do credit checks. It is not discriminatory. People in desperate situations make desperate decisions. Bk is a desperate situation. Companies cannot open themselves up to the often unstable and short sited decisions people filing bk can sometimes make. (I AM NOT SAYING EVERYBODY THAT FILES SO SAVE THE LECTURE) You are protecting yourself by filing bk. Companies are protecting their stock holders by avoiding hirng people who could easily become an assets protection issue. I own stock in my company and sometimes I am forced to sell some of the stock to survive b/c of my 3 year daughter having cancer and me stepping down from my relatively good paying job to the district level. I am glad my company protects my interest. Sorry, I hope you find a job. I am sure you will but dont blame companies and throw out the "d" word just because it hurts your feelings to be judged on your bk. Its part of the process. As crazy and insane as it is...its part of the process.

My input,
Most companies do background checks looking for people with criminal backgrounds........ also people so deep in debt they just "might" be tempted at work...... They also look for arrest records - DUI, theft, etc....
They are mainly looking for people with serious "issues" in their lives.
I'm sure employers see BK on lots of credit reports...... The fact that they did file BK tells an employer that most applicants took measures to "clean up their life"......
As a past employer I would rather see a BK, than someone arrested for theft, or a felony....or a peson so "over extended" they can't make ends meet (what measures would they take??).
My thoughts,

"It's amazing the paths that our feet sometimes follow in life".
My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

Personally, I would rather hire someone with a BK on their credit report and no debt than someone who is overextended and has a mountain of debt. Having enormous debt hanging over someone could certainly impact their ability to do their job.

I agree with the point raised that people who file BK are not thieves! I surely am not!
Unfortunately, in today’s society many large employers do routinely "not give consideration" to does who have BK on their Credit Report. It's a shame but it's true.
On the up side, I think I may have found the perfect employer for me. Northwestern University, they don't do credit report checks, they do background criminal checks only on those applicants who's positions mandate it (stem cell research and such), and they have excellent benefits including on site day care... The only down side is that I will be traveling over an hour each way to work. I hope to arrange a part time schedule with them some day since my main reason of going back to work is health insurance. My husband is self employed. I do love the fact that they have awesome research opportunities for me! The campus is so beautiful right on Lake Michigan in Evanston. I can't wait to apply!!!
Please keep your fingers crossed for me.
As far as my application to Blue Cross Blue Shield, a nurse keeps on calling and leaving messages at home wanting more information from me. I think I’ll just tell them to forget it so that I don’t have an insurance turn down in my record “somewhere”. LOL . I hope to have a job by January of next year, I want to spend the Holidays at home before going back to work.Edyta...
