Yep, me too. Everybody knows everybody, and the mailman knows everyTHING about everybody.

I've probably given our mailman more material than he's seen since the 70's when the 200 acres surrounding us was all a big commune, and the neighbors kept building shacks out of orange crates and baling wire, then getting stoned and burning them down again.

Couple of weeks ago, we got a "victim's impact statement" questionnaire from the parole board in another state, asking us to detail for the court the impact that being carjacked has had on our lives, so that they could take that into consideration in sentencing. There it was on the outside of a gigantic envelope, big as life: "XXXXXX County Board of Parole, Criminal Court, City, State, Zip".

<sigh...> And of course, I'm such a mess that I felt compelled to "happen" to be running to the mailbox with the response just as the mailman drove by, so I could tell him that WE were the victims.

I was just going to post this!! I thought for sure my mail lady wouldn't know until I got my discharge papers....Directly on top in the left hand corner it stated: Bankruptcy Court of Wisconsin....Nice!

Most people wouldn't think I've declared bankruptcy. I have an Escalade in the garage, my daughter goes to private school and my house is 3 years old. If they do know, who cares? None of their dang business.

Heartburn, I have to add this to what you said. We learned the HARD way. Don't ever, NOT EVER cosign a note for anyone--even a family member. They have a very NASTY way of turning on you... for your generosity......

Liz, I guess we both need a dose of Stilltheone's "none of their dang business" attitude...

It is tough. When we filed, I had told my former boss, as I also considered her a close friend. With me needing time off to meet with our attorney, etc., I just felt it better to be honest. As soon as it hit the paper we actually had clients come in and mention it to her.."I saw so and so and her husband filed BK..." It was awful. My boss delighted in rubbing it in my nose that people were talking. Needless to say I no longer work for her.

I would like to think that four years later most people have forgotten. People talk about us more for the accomplishments we've made since we filed than they do the actual filing.

To be honest, I think my first thought would be that you were some bk'ers creditor.
Nolo Press book on filing Chapter 7, there are others too. (I have no affiliation with Nolo Press; just a happy customer.) Best wishes to you!
