Massive debt default means HUGE 100K+ ch 7

Question - will the amount of debt BEFORE DH and I defaulted be ignored when it comes down to the amount we will be filing on? Our debt is enormous now, but since we're waiting a year to file, the fees alone will be astronomical.

We got a BOA bill and the interest on it AND the over-the-limit fee will add $500 PER MONTH to our debt JUST on that card. Imagine that multipled over a year on that and other cards.

I guess it is the final amount, right?

I waited more than a year here in Texas and I'll file next week (crossing my fingers) with 150k worth of debt that's virtually all from Credit Cards. I'll bet it's grown 50k or so since we stopped making payments.

Stay tuned and I'll be sharing my experiences in the months ahead.
Discharged November 2008 100 days after filing no-asset Chapter 7. We intended to let a two-year-old vehicle go back to the bank and reaffirm an inexpensive ten-year-old SUV and our home mortgage. In the end we surrendered ALL of our vehicles and reaffirmed NOTHING. We'll "ride through" our mortgage after the court ruled it an undue hardship.

To OP: I filed with $169K in cc debt due to a business that closed last yr.

In Dec 2007, when I stopped paying and using cc, my total cc debt was $147K.....Yes that's right approximately $20K in fees and late charges and interest climbing to 30-40% on some cards in only 6 months. So, yeah, don't feel bad, it happens, I was only intending to wait 90 days, but just procrastinated for a few more months. Actually, made me look a little better at the 341 when the UST asked when was the last time I used or paid a cc...I said 6 months.....he went to next question...yay!
                6/11/08 - Filed Ch. 7, Filed Pro Se, No-Assets
                7/15/08 - 341 Meeting Held
                10/01/08 - Discharged
                10/08/08 - Case officially Closed!!

I was a similar crash. CC debt was through the roof and then it compounded for about seven months with no payments while I made all preparations to file. Total CC debt went from about $130K to about $170K in that time. Some cards were incurring almost $1000 per month.

That's the magic of compound interest right? Next time I'll try to get it to go the other direction.

341 meeting was smooth. Waiting for discharge.
