Don't worry about it...believe me. I worried myself silly about being forced into a 13 since I was 13K above the median. I have a ton of gray hair now (I'm under 40) and my blood pressure is still high (despite medication.) I used to be able to get some pretty low readings on the medication...not anymore.
Point is, it never even came up that I should be considered for a 13. No UST issues whatsoever. I really didn't have any extra money to pay, still don't. Just be honest and you'll stay out of trouble from my experience. A few tips for over the median people:

    1) Pay more in rent than you really need to. Move after discharge. I just did.
    2) Try putting your children in daycare, even if they don't need to be. I did and it counted as a legitimate expense. In a way it was. You could call it mental healthcare for my spouse.

I"m sure there are a zillion other tips from the people here.

Don't fret, whatever you do. I think I've lost 10 years for no reason.
    Good luck.

We seem to be taking the exact opposite approach right now. Our rent is only $400 and the local allowance is $996. But if they try to push us into a 13 the first thing I am gonna do is move to a more expensive rental. I would really like to stay where we are since we are on a month to month lease and I like that freedom. That and there aren't too many decent options around here.

Well, give me about 9 months and that might be an option. But that is a good idea if you have kids.
