    visa debit cards after filing?

Will my credit union let me keep my visa debit (not credit) card?

I'll still need something with a "visa" on it for expensed business travel (plane and car rental).

Debit cards are tied to your checking/savings accounts. If there is no reason for them to close out your account, you should have no problem keeping it.

You might want to check with car rentals before hand. I had to rent a car, and they wouldn't let me use a visa debit card. They said they only except credit cards.

I would expect though that if you are BKing any other accounts with your credit union, they will close your checking account.....

If not, as others have said, they will probably let you keep it.

I was able to keep my Mastercard debit tied to my bank account. Didn't BK anything with the bank though, so as others said, might depend on whether or not your bank was included in your filing. I've used my debit Mastercard for hotel rooms and car rentals and never had a problem. More and more places are allowing debit cards these days.

actually, I'm surrendering a boat to them. (or to the trustee, whomever).

That will get my savings/checking accounts closed?

Check for cross collateralization on your loan docs.

You might want to think about opening a checking account with a bank that is in included in your BK, just in case it does CC.

You meant 'isn't' included in your BK, right? We have a car that was financed through our bank which we just gave back to them. Our attorney strongly advised us to open another account at a 2nd bank beforehand, which we did. We did leave the 1st checking account open, just so there wouldn't be any questions, but it only has an 80 cent balance.

So far so good on my Visa Debit through the credit union. Although I have not let my van go yet so we'll see what happens.

Also please be aware that in order to rent a car with a debit card even if it has the VISA logo on it you have to go through a credit check. Fresh out of a BK you most likely will not be allowed to rent without a major credit card (learned all this the hard way!)

Really?? So if I have a major credit card, they don't run my credit, but if I use my debit, they do???

Isn't there something in the VISA/MASTER agreements that prohibit that?
