    A few questions before we get started...

    Hi, all! I am really glad to have found this forum as all of this is very new and scary for me.

    My husband and I have about $100k in unsecured debt. I met with a bankruptcy attorney last week and we came up with a game plan. Also, my husband and I are filing for divorce in the very near future and then we will individually file Chapter 7 in about six months (January or February 2009). The attorney advised us to stop paying the credit card bills from this point forward. So, I got an apartment yesterday and and the process now starts.

    Here's my problem: I need some things for my apartment and I have no money. We will be current on all of our payments up until next Friday. Can I go out and purchase the few things I need with a CC without getting into trouble?

    Thanks.

    ETA: by "things" I don't mean a new 50" plasma TV. I need a small vacuum cleaner, some silverware and dishes, etc.

    You need basic living things....

    When you go to value them in your BK petition, do it at garage sale /Goodwill prices.

    Don't go crazy buying the finest china, if you know what I mean.
    Craiglist.org has oodles of stuff for sale for cheap.

      February is still 7 months from now. Right NOW you can still use your credit cards. The purchases might become an issue if they occurr within 6 months of filing. So make your cc purchases ASAP - still this month to avoid any problems.

        If you have a Burlington Coat Factory in your area, you can get alot of stuff for cheap..
        and it's good stuff too..Oneida silverware, dishes, etc. I bought some for like $13.00 a set.

          I would buy what you need now and then start the not using CC's.

            Thank you for your quick responses. I figured that I had a small window of time in which to purchase my necessities on a CC . I stopped at Big Lots and Goodwill today and I am going to hit Marshalls, TJMaxx and Burlington tomorrow. There are good bargains to be had at all of those places.

              That's good information to have. I have one in my area, but I've never been there. I'm window shopping tomorrow. Thanks.

                JC Penny Outlet or Big Lots (Pic n Save) for sheets, bedding, towels....
                99C store for some household things....

                Those places you can stretch your buck a little for what you're getting.
