Hey All...So far I've managed the phone calls pretty well..We have been trying for a loan mod with our mortgage lender, but are not holding our breath (would have passed out long ago). We are almost 98% certain at this point that we will have to lose our home in this mess, too many reasons to let it go, not enough--other than emotional ones of course--to keep. We made the decision in May, and now June, to not make the payments, to keep the $$ aside for moving costs, just in case. Ok, so we've been getting the daily phone calls, blah blah..but they've been mild enough. We tell them the same thing over and over, that we are waiting to hear from the other dept. Well, this "gentleman" called a little earlier, and was the first time I've gotten to tears over a call. I told him basically the same thing, and that if we can't work anything out we will be forced to go into foreclosure (we are not mentioning the bk as of yet). He proceeded to belittle me, tell me "this is no laughing matter" because I had a nervous laugh in my voice when I was trying to explain things to him. He kept asking me why we've gotten so behind, and that this was "ruining our credit more and more every day" --to which I DID laugh and said, sir, that is the LEAST important thing to me at this point. I was so frustrated, and he told me that if we didn't make the payments, that we couldn't get the loan mod, and I told him, well, if we can't get the loan mod, then we can't get the payments current, so I guess we're at a standstill. He just wouldn't STOP so I finally just said I think we're done here, and I hung up on him! I felt a little bad for that, but I was just shaking...So, that really is the only reason for my post--to let these feelings out. I feel like a complete and total loser And I'm irritated to have allowed myself to get so upset over some stupid collections guy!! And maybe it's a good thing (think positively, right?)--reminds me I don't need this stress, and getting out from under this over-priced, underwater, option ARM loan with skyhigh property taxes will be the BEST THING EVER FOR MY FAMILY!! Who cares how pretty this house is...it's just a house. Thanks for the therapy session, folks, how much do I owe? Bill me, hahaha...oh, and right after I hung up, got another call from an auto recovery place, but they were just asking if we'd ret'd the vehicle to the dealership, which we've done, so no biggie there.

Don't feel badly for hanging up... it's the best thing you could have done. Some of them will go on and on and on if you let them, will go out of their way to try to make you feel even worse about a bad situation - maybe they can guilt you into paying - and all you can do is hang up and not let 'em get to you.Ch. 7 filed: 6/13/08, Friday the 13th!

Sweetheart (meant in all the true meaning), you did the right thing. NOBODY needs to belittle you. The man was very unprofessional. Bk is bad enough on the nerves than to endure A**holes. Get a cold one, (whatever that is to you) lay back in a comfortable chair, put your feet up, and know, you gave him what he deserved.
I am sure I can speak for every good person here. You did well. 'HubIf I knew it all, would I be here?? Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.

I agree. He was doing exactly what he gets paid to do. The more they rattle you, the more they think there's a chance you'll find a way to pay them. I wouldn't answer the phone. It does nothing for you and I don't know of anyone who can handle those phone calls without getting upset. I do know that the kind of stress they cause is bad for your health, so if I were you I would get caller ID and ignore them.

He's not worth your time and frustration. He gets paid to harass people. I would ignore him and screen calls to avoid another frustrating conversation with that fool. Do what's best for you and your family. If he calls back, don't waste your time, just hang up.
The closest thing to this type call I received was from Capital One. I had a signature loan with them and hadn't made a payment in about 5 months. Finally the collector was able to get me on the phone at work and proceeded to tell me how behind I was and how long it had been since they received a payment (Duh!?!). Since I was at work, I couldn't really go into the BK thing and told him I was unable to bring the account current. He tried to make me feel bad about how much I owed. When I told him I didn't really feel that bad about it, he got sarcastic and called me a deadbeat that took their money and didn't want to pay it back. I'm happy to say I hung up on him and never had to talk to them again because I filed shortly afterwards.
Don't let them get to you, their job is to get us to pay by any means necessary, but like my mom used to say you can't get blood from a turnip.Filed Chapter 7 (Primarily Business Expenses) 04/10/2008 FICO 468

Thanks to all of you who replied--you really made me feel alot better about the situation! (and Hub--the "cold one" was a great suggestion!!) By sheer coincidence I caught a show on tv yesterday called "Maxed Out Credit" or something similar--and it was showing these horrid collectors in their natural habitat, making calls and harrassing people. The 2 guys they profiled did seem like total u-know-whats and confirmed pretty much everything that guy was doing yesterday. I will definitely not let another one of these people get under my skin again.

Bill collectors are paid and trained to belittle you and harass you. Their goal is to make you feel so bad you send something to them. Don't pay them anymind. When they start being abusive tell them that with the tone they are taking you don't feel you can continue the call with them and hang up. (Someone else will probably call but maybe they'll be politer).
