My Ch. 7 and name listed in Google!

Has this happened to anyone?

My local paper listed my Ch. 7 filing and of course posted it on their website. Now it's in Google when my name is Googled. I'm a click away from total embarrasment.

Anyone have this happen? Any advice on removing it? I contacted the paper and they said too bad, it's public info. Which I was aware, but didn't realize someone could find it so easily.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to remove it. The paper is right....your filing is public record. Your name has already been published, you can't remove it.

Just out of curiousity, I tried googling my name and nothing came up. Bummer!

Be grateful that you can google your name and nothing come up. More and more prospective employers are googling applicant's names to see what MAY come up, such as an inapropriate post or home video on YouTube and the like.

I'm so boring, I don't do anything. This bankruptcy is the most interesting thing that's really ever gone on in my life. Sad, I know.

Welcome to the world of the internet where all it takes is your name published somewhere and in the next few minutes the entire world will see it IF they google your name. If your name is published in the newspaper for anything, you can bet it will be on the internet. Now you know why many people decline to be interviewed by newspapers. Privacy is out the window - you can view peoples' homes now via Google Earth and see their entire house and yard/location from the air and the entire world will know if your name is in any online web service for a family tree (good reason never to use your mother's maiden name as a password - easily found out).

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If someone wants to find out if you filed bankruptcy, all that information is public record and easily found out.

Sorry to stray - but check out google street view. Vehicles with cameras were driven around some cities (more to come) and took 360 degree pictures.

This is a bummer. You don't deserve this. The downside of the internet ... Hopefully that link will be inoperative after a period of time. I don't quite understand links and all, but it seems that some disappear after a while.

I've been telling myself not to worry about the public nature of this--because I was assuming people would have to look through bankruptcy records to find out about my filing (to be done later this summer.)

This is different. My heart goes out to you. I still think filing for bk is legitimate and honorable, and I appreciate you sharing this information. I guess I need to get ready for this possibility as well.

Which is more important to you, discharging your debt or not having your name in the paper? My vote goes for having my debt discharged. If anyone is that concern about me, then they can contribute to my bills and I can go on with my life.

The internet is serious business™. It is no longer the newer, bigger stomping ground for BBS nerds that it was in '94. If people want info bad enough, they will get it with either a Google search or if its not been made public on the intarwebs, a small fee to an online business such as US Search can get background checks, addresses, etc. Or if you want to find someone bad enough, you can usually use something like http://www.zabasearch.com to track them down with fairly good results.

This all goes back to the many threads I've seen on here about similar problems. You made a business decision and are probably better off now than you were before. So what if a few people find out that maybe you managed your money poorly (like me), your job went south, got divorced, etc. You no longer have to worry about creditors, collection agencies, lawyers for your creditors, or maybe simply how you're going to feed your kids this week. Try to move on with your life. People knowing that you made some mistakes should be the last thing on your mind. I know it will be when my lawyer files for me later this month.

Clap, Clap, Clap, Squarejaw: Absolutly correct. Not only that, with Google maps and County GIS maps you can find anything anybody and most SS numbers. I can "skip trace" and I do not have to leave this office chair. Big Brother is here and has been longer than you think.

Those funny little things above stop lights are not JUST to change the light, they are cameras not all in service yet. How many times I have seen on TV the stupid thieves ripping off convenience stores. When you go into the hospital or give blood, or have a physical, don't you know your blood is tested for EVERYTHING like drugs, health reasons, HIV, PSA, and DNA? It is right around the corner that every person's DNA will be in a computer for crime prevention. Good? I suppose. 'Hub
