My niece and her dh are filing BK7 shortly. They've sent in all their paperwork and waiting for the final phone call from their attorney to "file". So, today she told me they are buying a new Golden Retriever puppy for "only" $250. I asked her if she talked to her attorney about that. She says he sees no problem with it. Anyone ever hear anything like that? Personally, I think she's crazy...she lives in an apartment complex with no yard! I could go on forever about this one, but I'll spare you all.

I hope they know how much that dog sheds. And they have a lot of energy.

My 2 cents: You will have to list that (I mean, she will) as we had to list our three cats at a value of 1 buck each. She may be questioned in the wisdom of this as the electric bill or rent or food is a bit more important than a dog that costs money on an ongoing basis. You can get free dogs almost anywhere as we have many dropped off on our property. My personal feeling and forgive me for being krass (sp) but that was unwise. I wish the Trustee could sell our cats, they eat us out of money we need ourselve for our own food. They are on a dry diet and when my wife states that they won't eat the stuff, I say, they will when they get hungry enough. Otherwise they can go out a kill a squirell or mouse. The ARE cats after all. The thing is, you don't have to walk a cat. Dogs are cute but are very much labor intensive. Remember, this is only my opinion. 'HubIf I knew it all, would I be here?? People do the craziest things at the craziest times...sorta like our good friends' son who got married two years ago and both he and his new bride were struggling for funds to get started in their new life/house but went out and bought a $650 dog! The poop hit the fan for months among relatives, believe me! Anyway, the pup will probably bring happiness into their lives after all this and hopefully they will love and take care of the pup who is one of the most loving dogs in nature and a great family dog. If the attorney knows and has no problem with it, more power to them. However, with the dog comes vet bills, house training, food, exercise (it's a big dog - should have a big back yard), just to name a few things with new dog ownership... Hope the newness doesn't wear off to quickly..._________________________________________

Ms. Cali: Congrats.
Back to business, sometimes even in duress, we need some life pleasures. Perhaps this additional dog will be that. It is not for ME to approve or disapprove. My opinion is like "bellybuttons” everyone has one. I think it unwise in timing. That is all. 'HubIf I knew it all, would I be here?? I feel sorry for the dog! Golden retrievers require a LOT of exercise. So that poor thing will be couped up in an apartment. Sad! I hope they give him/her lots of love at least and I can bet that they will decide in the future they shouldn't have done this and can't handle it and then that poor dog will be passed on to someone else.
Insofar as their decision to do this - I agree with o/p - not wise financially. I've got 3 dogs and they cost $$$....shots, vet bills, food, toys ect.Filed Chapter 7 Pro-Se May 29, 2008

AngelinaCat - DH got home from work and I told him about the whole conversation. He said they won't be married long. Of course I hope he's wrong. Time will tell.
As for the space to run for the pup/dog, I tried to explain that to her. I have 2 acres, hopefully IF they get the pup, they'll bring him/her to my place at least a couple times a week to run. I won't be holding my breath though.May 5, 2008 - Filed Ch7

If they haven't bought the dog yet they can get one at the humane society for a lot cheaper and might be saving a dogs life in the process. We did just that and got a wonderful springer spaniel. Also they'd want a breed that would be good with kids and maybe an older dog rather than a puppy would be a better choice.
Any kind of sporting or hunting breed is going to need a lot of excercise and with a young baby that might not be their best choice. Also while they are cute as a puppy they get bigger than people realize and are one of the most common dogs at shelters and humane societys as people give them up.
Look on humane society and shelter sites and you'll see that retrievers and labs make up well over 60% of the dogs and it can be as cheap as $60 to get one there.

I have a bassett hound as well. I cannot imagine owning another dog. This breed is really alot of work! You said she lives in an apartment, thats fine for an older bassett who isnt fond of walking although I feel sorry for her neighbors as they love to whine. I cannot imagine a Golden in an apartment!
I give them 3 weeks before the pup is being adopted out.
