If you have no debt and have to wait 2-5 yrs, having 20-40% down won't be hard to do.
And just because you have a job and barely making it now, doesn't mean you will have a job later on with the same bills. This is what happen to me. I had a very high paying job and it was taken away, but of course my bills were still the same. We barely made it for almost a year(on my savings and one income) and I got tired of the stress. Now we are filing next month, C7. When it is all said and done, my life will be better.
