    Stuck in reverse

I'll try to make this short story..

I took my 1991 Buick in a shop because it had bad trans to be fixed. I decided I was going to reaffirm that car as I only owed about 3.5k on it. 2 weeks later shop mechanic called me told me engine blew up and I needed a new motor. I already paid him for trans service (got discount, payed only for parts). At that point I decided that I was not going to reaffirm the car as it's not worth to me.
I called my bank to tell them that I was not going to reaffirm the car (my lawyer also sent them letter). I informed the bankruptcy department of situation, that the car is not drivable and that I do not wish to reaffirm it. They questioned my decision because they saw that I already made payment on it a month ago (why all of a sudden change?). I told them they can come pick the car up which is at mechanic shop. The guy that I spoke to said that it's not "worth" for them to pick it up and that they will not release the title. He didn't sound too happy about the whole situation. My question is, what am I supposed to do with the car ? I can't donate it when I don't have the title. I can't keep it on the parking lot. They won't come and pick the car up nor release title. My attorney advised me to visit local PD and ask them what legal steps can I take about this situation. Does anyone here have any insights, info on this matter, anything that could be helpful ?

    Thank you for long read..

Hmm I think your lawyer has the right idea. On the bright side an abandoned car can often lead to a junk title if its left to long on someone's property. The problem might be the mechanic not wanting it around his shop.

normally when a mechanic calls to tell you the engine blew, it's because one of his other mechanics that is 18 years old took it for a spin and drove the living mess out of it. I can't trust mech's for the life of me. I've seen this too often

If your car creditor is a local bank, just get a tow truck to tow it into the bank's parking lot. Walk the keys, registration papers inside and give them to the first bank employee that you see in there, and without saying a word walk back out. Sooner or later they will figure things out.

We had a relative a few years ago that lived in the room above our garage. Hes a little nuts, (but hes realted what are you gonna do) When he diappeared to another state he left a car in our driveway. No title. He didn't want it back and didn't know where the title was. We tried to take it to the junkyard but no title no go. Theres a recycling center near by, So my husband dismantled the thing piece by piece and took a load in every time he was going to town. By the way the price of scrap metel is way up right now. Torch is the fastest way. Forget the wrench.

If the mechanic is ok with you taking the car away at this point...then maybe you could keep it until you are a ble to source another motor alot cheaper. Let the car sit in the driveway for a while if you can. You can also do a "lien sale" on the car. The bnk should not contest it because they don't want it. You should also try to get a letter from the bank stating that they do not want it.

If you have the letter it will make doing a lien sale a lot easier. You should find info on a lien sale from your state local DMV office. Title office or whatever it's called there.

If your lien sale goes ok, then you will have the title. Ball will then be in yur court. Many options. Sell the rebuilt trans out of it. Sell to a scrap yard. Some pay you and hall the car away.
